| 80977 | 2002-09-19 05:41:00 | Hey everyone. Thanks to Chris, I got Suse Linux 8.0 today and installed - very nice. However, upon rebooting into Windows to get some modem drivers, I found I was faced with "NTLDR is missing" etc, and wonder how to fix this problem. I've fixed it in the past, but it always removes lilo - and this time I wanna keep it. How do I fix this? I have the XP install CD, if that's any help. Cheers, Jonathan Giles |

| 80979 | 2002-09-19 05:54:00 | hmmm, Lilo is on the mbr, which links to Linux (which boots fine) and Windows, so I think Lilo is fine. I'll have a play around anyways, any more suggestions? Cheers, Jonathan |

| 80980 | 2002-09-19 05:58:00 | You have the option of placing lilo on the root partition, in which case this must be either the partition marked as bootable, or be called with another loader. | SaAB (1292) | ||
| 80981 | 2002-09-19 06:23:00 | Hey everyone. I just went into Linux and did a lilo -u /dev/hda which now results in windows xp starting up perfectly. but..... now I wanna get lilo in, and working properly - how? :) Cheers, Jonathan Giles |

Then download a boot untility - i use masterbooter, install that, it will install in the MBR and let you select either XP or Linux. There is also a fdisk program called efdisk with master booter, that will let you create more that one primary partition which can be booted from. Just make sure you backup any data before you play around with it. I haven't had any problems but stuff ups do happen.. |

| 80983 | 2002-09-19 07:19:00 | Thanks for everyones help! I managed to suss it all out, but my end result is kind of clunky: I use NTLDR to choose either Suse Linux or XP. Choosing XP boots XP, whilst choosing Linux boots Lilo, which then gives me Linux or XP as boot options. I really wish I could just use Lilo (it looks nice too :) Cheers everyone, Jonathan |

XP, NT, 2k are more difficult than the 9x versions . lilo works well with the earlier ones (usually) . Have a look at the Linux HOWTOs . . . but there's a very good description at this elegantly named site ( . poopoccurs . com/linux/dualboot . html" target="_blank">www . poopoccurs . com) . Just be careful . . . lilo got you out of this with the "lilo -u" to restore the MBR . Grub, the newer boot loader for Linux is said to handle XP . . . I don't know . But the recommended technique is the one using XP's loader and making an entry for Linux in boot . ini . You still have a safe way . . . using the boot floppy for Linux . |
