| 80936 | 2002-09-19 02:59:00 | According to some geezer, who researched the postings in a message board from 20 years ago, the smiley has been around since 1982 :-) I find this hard to believe as systems were heavily text-based prior to that and I remember writing code for rolling baton's in 1981 and I am sure it goes back further. But anyway, happy birthday smiley. In related news, there are concerns that global reserves of the smiley are running low and it's overuse is reducing its' effectiveness. |

The sideways ": - )" goes back a lot further ... probably to the early email period, certainly in newsgroups ... which were going in the 70s. But as everyone knows, there were no computers before the IBM PC. :D (ASCII=American Code for Information Interchange ... a "standard"). |
