2002-09-19 01:41:00 | I have downloaded and installed the driver for my conexant modem run the downloaded file's configuration file "HSFconfig" which told me my modem was setup as /dev/ttySHSFO but when I went to set my dialup connection (in the gui mode) I couldn't find this /dev/ttySHSFO so i went into SU shell thingie and tried to link it to dev modem with the command ln -s /dev/ttySHSFO /dev/modem the shell said something like "link exists" now when i went to set the modem up in dialup I set it to /dev/modem but once again it didn't work. Q.1 When the shell told me "link exists" did this mean there was a pre existing link, or did it mean that the link had just been created. Q.2 Also how do I remove the link if it is incorrect without removing the device. Anyhelp would be much appreciated Nigel Thomson

2002-09-19 03:09:00 | 1) The existing link could have been created by mandrake (pointing to COM1/2), but was probably made by the HSFconfig (the HCF driver does this). Deleting a link does not affect the origional file, they are like "Windows Shortcuts on Steriods" as someone once put it. You can check where the link points by either bringing up its properties in the file manager or by typing: cd /dev ls -l modem Which should give you a line like: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Sep 10 19:37 modem -> /dev/ttySHSF0 2) If it doesn't point to HSF0 (thats a zero btw) run: ln -sf ttySHSF0 modem The -f flag will force the link, overwriting the existing one (or you could have deleted the old link). A couple of things if you are having trouble dialing: 1) It could be a permissions problem, try loging in as root and see if dialing works (or atleast "query modem" in KPPP). Although don't do it for regularly because its a security risk. 2) Check the driver is loading correctly. Open (as root) /var/log/syslog in a text editor and do a search for "HSF" (it should be near the end of the file). On my system the lines look like: Sep 19 13:07:10 localhost kernel: PCI: Found IRQ 5 for device 00:09.0 Sep 19 13:07:10 localhost kernel: HCF ASIC ID: 215 Sep 19 13:07:10 localhost kernel: HCF DATAPUMP PART: '71' REV: 'BA'

2002-09-22 03:12:00 | Thanks for the advice, I followed the instructions and found the problem was that the link was pointing elsewhere so fixed that up, now when I try to connect to the net using KDE, I just get a little chirp, the same as on my windows side but no following dialing noises. I use XTRA as my ISP and i think my settings are correct, but if anyone knows of a page that has the setup info for Xtar that help would be much appreciated.

2002-09-24 09:03:00 | I hav found the Xtra settings and input them but still I get just the chirp and then nothing. Is this a common problem or am i just special as i don't seem to be able to track it down. (embarassingly enough I have just started studying Linux at tech) any help would be much appreciated

2002-10-03 08:51:00 | When i click on the connect to the internet button, I get the chirp as mentioned above, and then I get the error message pppd daemon died unexpectedly exit status 16 I checked up on the net and found a site that told me to edit the /etc/ppp/options file I did this but it has made no difference at all I know exit status means the modem is hanging up, but I don't know why and it is driving me nuts. Any help would be much appreciated Nigel Thomson

2002-10-03 11:15:00 | I recently got my Conexant HCF Winmodem working under Red Hat Linux 6.2 and I can't get Kppp to work at all. It seems to detect the modem, but that's it, won't dial or anything. But then I discovered wvdial. Works every time like a charm :) I've read that some machines won't work with one or another of the dial up utilities and the best thing to do is try the others. BTW, even when I finally got the modem connecting (it seemed to be connecting, that is) it just sat there and I couldn't make any progress. I then found you have to enter in the DNS servers for your ISP into the file /etc/resolv.conf. BTW, the easiest way to use wvdial is to edit the file /etc/wvdial.conf with your ISP log on details, then you just need to type 'wvdial' <enter> in the shell to run it. | Rod J (451) | |
2002-10-04 07:59:00 | Hello I am back well i read the kppp Faq thing posted by Graham L, and now my modem dials, says connecting to network for a while then i get the same daemon died unexpectedly, exit stats 16, i have tried changing to chap/pap and various other things suggested does any one have any ideas?, as I am now stuck with a modem that dials and then hangs up Thanks Nigel Thomson

2002-10-05 04:04:00 | After it crashes, try "tail -20 /var/log/messages" immediately after it drops out. Try (once) trying to connect while being root. (this is a dangerous thing if habitual ;-)). I suspect it will be that security problem. That second link about kppp will be the critical one. | Graham L (2) | |
2002-10-07 12:02:00 | Assuming your using KPPP (although there will be a similar option with other dialers), open up the settings for your account. Hit the button "Customize pppd arguments..", then add the argument "debug" (without quotes). Then try the connection again and have a look at /var/log/messages again. It should give you some quite detailed information about how its trying to connect.

2002-10-16 07:18:00 | I'm back, this must be getting to be one of the most drawn out posts in the history of PressF1, but I have been a little snowed under with assignments. Back to business, i have tried using the debug and checking the messages file the result is below I think the problem has something to do with the line LCP terminated by peer I also tried connecting the modem in root using the same Kppp account but it kept saying it couldn't find the modem which seems rather odd as it dials in my user account but not in the root, and i always thought root had all the rights!! I am using chap/pap authentication as most of the sites i went to seem to mention this as a possible cause of similar type errors, if there is anything more from the /messages file I need to enter here please let me know and I will enter it. but as I am a two fingered typist it may take a while Thans a lot Nigel Thomson
