| 81139 | 2002-09-19 23:33:00 | Hi, with all these service packs being released, I have been burning a couple of slipstreamed CD's. My problem is with my XP disc. I was able to slipstream SP-1 with the XP files OK, and burn them to disc - so far no problem. I can run the installer from the disc OK oo (I don't know if it will actually install as I don't have a spare machine to test it on, but signs ar good). The final test was to see if the CD was bootable (Yes, I have made a bootable CD, etc, etc). When booting from CD, floppy emulation begins, but then I get the above error, and windows loads off the HD. I found one page on google that had an explanation - upgrade the BIOS as it doesn't properly support booting from CD's. This is not the case here as the article referred to new copies of XP, not burned ones, and my new one works fine (I assume it wouldn't work if there was a BIOS issue!) Ay ideas anyone? G P |

Maybe if you leave out the bootable CD options in your burner program it might copy them over properly? (I could be wrong on this though - I haven't set up the slipstreaming for my CD, so it could be done differently). Mike. |

| 81141 | 2002-09-20 00:00:00 | No, I have to make the CD bootable. Slipstreaming works thus: Copy files from CD to HD Apply update to those files eg d:\xp\sevicepack1.exe -s:d:\xp\cdfiles Where sp1 is located in d:\xp and the files from the CD are in d:\xp\cdfiles The service pack extracts to a temp file, and then installs "integrates" with the files from the cd. You can then deploy this over a network to install XP pre-patched with sp-1. The trick is to get it onto a bootable CD instead to use for home use. Because the boot files are in the boot sector of the CD and not just files in the directory, you cannot just copy them over. You can extract them however, and then reinsert them using the bootable CD option in your burner and selecting the extracted boot.bin file as the boot image. So, just burning the files by themselves would give me a non-bootable CD. I must have a problem with my boot-setup on the CD, but what?? I have set no emulation, segment of sectors to 07C0 and number of sectors to 4, but no luck - I will try gain tho, in case I left something out. Back soon. G P |

I was thinking about my experience in copying things like Win CDs and I never had to make them bootable manually, but that'd be because I've just done direct copies, which would copy everything. I'll have another think about it :) Mike. |

Don't worry, I had forgatten to check the boot options before I burnt the CD, and they had reverted to floppy emulation instead of no emulation. Fixed it, and reburnt - works. Now, I just need to work ou how to preinstall my fav apps and I will be set :-) G P |
