ABIT's high performance budget GeForce4
ABIT has launched its new high performance budget Ti4200. The performance is achieved via their new cooling system that it claims will allow you to push performance of a GeForce4 Ti4200 chip up to the level of a Ti4600. The card has been labelled the Siluro GF4 Ti4200 OTES and it will be available for sale from the 23 of September with a price of £US150 (around the $450 mark for us here in Oz). The cooling system works like this:
OTES (Outside Thermal Exhaust System) uses some of the ideas from notebook cooling systems, although it clearly doesn't steal them wholesale, because it's patent-pending. It uses a vacuum to seal the Ti4200 on a copper base, then a 7,200 rpm fan to cool the system. This of course just gives you a cooler card, so in order to actually deliver the extra performance Abit is shipping overclocking tools with it.
You can read more on the card at The Register (www.theregister.co.uk).

mp3Trim version 1.81 released
mp3Trim, the MP3 editor, version 1.81 has been released for download. The changes in this version are a fixed minor bug related to the seek-info header. mp3Trim's main advantage is that it works directly in the MP3 format without having to decode/re-encode, so it is very fast and doesn't degrade the music quality.

:-) turns 20
Twenty years ago today Scott Fahlman invented the now famous :-) which has evolved and become one of the most widely used symbols around. here's a little bit on the inventer of the smiley symbol:
The IBM researcher has devoted his professional life to artificial intelligence, the practice of teaching computers how to think like humans.

Fahlman is known for his work with neural networks -- a computer technique designed to mimic the human brain -- and helping develop Common Lisp, a computer language that uses symbols instead of numbers, but the bearded scientist is perhaps best known for a flash of inspiration that helped to define Internet culture, in all of its ungrammatical glory.

On September 19, 1982, Fahlman typed :-) in an online message.

Windows XP SP1 not in compliance with consent decree
One of the anti-Microsoft watchdog companies (ProComp-Project To Promote Competition and Innovation In The Digital Age) is claiming that Microsoft is guilty of six violations of its consent decree with the government. ProComp has sent a letter to the Department of Justice and New York Attorney General's Office claiming that Windows XP Service Pack 1 is "rife" with efforts to bypass the spirit and intent of Microsoft's antitrust consent decree with the Department of Justice In their words:
All tolled, "SP1 for Windows XP is not, in our view, in compliance. Service Pack 3 for Windows 2000 is even less compliant," the letter claimed. Both service packs shipped as a result of the proposed consent decree. Windows 2000 SP3 shipped in August. Windows XP shipped on Sept. 9.

Windows Media Player 9 codecs without DRM
One of the moderators over at the Doom9 Forums has developed managed to snag the wmp9 codecs (this should allow WMP9 to work on Windows 98) and created a utility that will allow you to encode your DVD's. This could be a handy tool for all those looking to rip their DVD's. You can read the forum post here (forum.doom9.org) and download the codecs and utility from the links below.

A program has been released that will allow you to play the original Unreal maps using the S3 Texture Conversion pack. The S3TC adds highly details and textured effects to the already outstanding Unreal textures. Here are the instructions on the install:
This program allows you to convert UT 2nd CD Texture Packages to Unreal compatible packages.

Install:

- Install one of the recent OpenGl Patches (OpenGlDrv2.1.0.4.zip for Unreal Version 224 or OpenGlDrv2.1.0.5.zip for Unreal Version226/UnrealGold), and check that "S3TC" is set to true.
- Copy Every file from UT 2nd CD "Texture" folder (ex : D:Textures) into an empty directory (ex : c: empUTHiResTextures).
- Extract the S3TCExt.exe into this folder too, and run it.

Backing up your copy protected games and CD's
3dgpu has posted up and article on how to successfully backup your copy protected games and CD's. Here's a clip:
Received a few emails asking about backing up some of the latest copy protected games out there and thought I would post a summary of some information I wrote for a previous article at another site. I did some rather extensive research on the subject and even went out and purchased the equipment and ran it through a ton of tests to make sure it works, and it has on everything I have tried so far. Since the law provides the right for purchasers of games and CD's to make backup copies for personal use, there should be no DCMA or other copyright violation issues.

81449 2002-09-20 14:08:00 It just goes to show that you can't believe everything found on the net eh! :-(

There were two versions listed.

1. In 1972 Franklin Loufrani, a journalist, created a simple concept for European newspapers, sideways type icons to communicate emotions--emoticons. He gave his original icon :) the name of "Smiley". Smiley quickly spread across the world. Other emoticons followed Smiley.

2. Here is another: According to CNN.com Scott Fahlman, an IBM researcher known for his work with neural networks is perhaps best known for a flash of inspiration that helped to define Internet culture, in all of its ungrammatical glory. On September 19, 1982, Fahlman typed :-) in an online message.
---------------------------------------------------

I think that I prefer the CNN version, as shown on the CNN site (www.cnn.com), where it shows a picture of Scott Fahlman and quotes his claim to being the originator.

That puts it back to 20 yrs old.

You were right all along Rob! :)
