| 81392 | 2002-09-20 09:00:00 | Ok, this is a topic I am sure you will all enjoy. What you do, is that you can put down all the advantages and disadvantages of the Mac and the PC. As long as everyone puts down their ideas It will turn out well and will give useful information to a person in the market for a new PC. (I am completely anti-Mac myself :D). Mac: Good looks, user interface prefered by most. PC: Gaming, much wider range of Programs. Zan P.S At the end, I will right up a summary and post it - get your ideas in here! (Don't be shy.) |

| 81396 | 2002-09-20 09:58:00 | The fundamental difference between PCs & Macs is that PC users don't mind that a small number of computer users prefer Macs. B-) Cheers Billy 8-{) |

| 81397 | 2002-09-20 10:19:00 | I'll bite . There is only one advantage of PC over Mac . That is that PCs are easier to upgrade component by component, so that there is a cost advantage over time . I have been forced into using a PC because of client demand, and economic upgradeability is the only advantage I have discovered . If I wanted to upgrade my Mac, I had to turn over the whole box . Now with this benighted thing that Bill Gates calls a "personal computer", I can just add a bit here, take a bit away there . Otherwise there is no comparison between the two for those of us who have genuinely used both Macs and PCs, rather than just arguing on the basis of ignorance or rank prejudice, or a little play at a friend's house . I started my computer use on an IBM thing running Multimate, then gratefully moved onto Macs for about 10 years . I have been consigned to this wilderness for the past 4 years (I was operating both for a while, so there was an overlap) . As soon as I retire and I can say goodbye to my clients, I will sell my present PeeCee junk and buy a real computer to enjoy again . And it is a myth perpetuated for years that there is more software available for the PC than the Mac . That may once have been true, and there may be more junk software for the PC (who cares?) but in terms of really useful software, there is little difference . And oddly enough, Bill Gate's theftware often works better on a Mac - the Office suite was better on the Mac when I had to change over, and so were Outlook Express and Internet Explorer . My two cents worth . John |

Also any first time buyers would undoubtedly be better off with a PC despite the more user friendly nature of the Mac, because they would have more help available should they encounter any problems. This being due to simple statistics. More people have PC's at home, and therefore more experience and knowledge to pass on to others. This forum being a prime example. However, whilst my colleagues and I were all frantically ridding ourselves of a series of viruses recently, one chappie (a Mac owner) was laughing up his sleeve at the rest of us. I would gladly have swapped with him at that time! |
