81435 2002-09-20 05:42:00 Hey there everyone (and Chris)
I have a weird bug which I'm hoping you can help me with:

When I go into Yast2 to use online update, it opens, does its looking, then closes without letting me update.
Last night i was mucking around in there, starting and stopping downloads, and then the above begun..

Any suggestions on how I can upgrade my machine?
Cheers,
Jonathan Giles

81436 2002-09-20 07:29:00 I'm NOT a linux expert!!!
I hit the online updtae thingy, nothing seemed to happen, BUT the light on my cable modem is flashing furiously, so maybe thats it?
I don't know honestly, no idea.

81437 2002-09-20 08:11:00 I have been trolling through the SuSe help sites lately in preparation of the great install and found this (sdb.suse.de) on updates or lack of ....... it's not quite the problem you are describing but it might help. Jen C (20)
81438 2002-09-20 08:26:00 Or .......

YaST Online Update No Longer Works After a Crash (sdb.suse.de) .... you never know!

YaST refuses to execute a system update (sdb.suse.de)

81439 2002-09-20 09:52:00 A couple of silly questions for you. When you accessed Yast it asked for your password, didn't it? And the next silly question is of course were you connected to the internet?

The first thing Online Update does is look for available download servers. If it can't find any it won't start.

81440 2002-09-20 10:32:00 thanks for all your replies - I will read into the links posted.

Yes, when I go into the yast app I type the correct password (otherwise i can't get in), and yeah, I'm on the internet.

perhaps something is different because they are near to releasing SuSE 8.1?

81441 2002-09-20 11:25:00 There isn't any problem with the Online Update feature. I have just accessed it and it rather kindly said that my last update was two days ago and there are no new updates. It would seem that you may have altered the program somehow, but I am not sure what it would be.

As you say perhaps the links Jen provided will help you solve it.

81442 2002-09-20 11:54:00 Thanks to everyone - I'm in Linux now and am autoupdating (there're heaps of downloads left)...

Any suggestions on the quickest servers?

Thanks,
Jonathan Giles

81443 2002-09-20 23:55:00 OK, JoGiles,
What did you do to make it more co-operative? My experiances are listed above, they sound less successful!
Chris Wilson (431)
81444 2002-09-21 00:10:00 all that was needed was a:

rm -rf /var/lib/YaST/patches/i386/updates/8.0/

Cheers to everyone,
Jonathan

P.S - Thanks for everything Chris - I know I haven't emailed you to say thanks - I'm spending all my time in Linux, and haven't got your email addy in here, but thanks for all the help and setting me up with Suse 8.0 - it's great.
