| 81770 | 2002-09-21 10:14:00 | Error with Add/Remove Programs using Service Pack 1 There has been a problem for people using Styles XP and visual themes after installing XP SP1 . The problem is that after you install certain themes, the Add/Remove function does not work anymore and you receive an error message "Parser Message: Value creation failed " at line 472 . Thankfully a fix has been posted for this problem . Just follow these steps: This is a problem with the file shellstyle . dll, which is included in most visual styles . 1 . ) Go to your /WINDOWS/Resources/Themes directory, or wherever you may have your themes located . 2 . ) Go into the directory of the theme your currently using . Example: Using 'Semplice' by KoL? Navigate to /WINDOWS/Resources/Themes/Semplice 3 . ) Go into the folder called 'Shell" within the previous directory . 4 . ) Inside you'll find a folder with a file called 'shellstyle . dll' inside . Now remember the name of the theme your using? ( Example: Semplice) . You need to rename this folder from Shell to the name of the theme your currently using . If you don't know the exact name, go to Display Properties, and try to Display/Show the theme, the name you see in Display Properties is the name you need to change the 'Shell' folder to . Example: Using Semplice as an example, the Shell folder for that theme is called 'Shell', in this situation you'll need to rename the folder to 'Semplice' . Easy enough, right? Note that for multi-part themes, aka themes with more than one variation or color, you'll need to rename each corresponding 'Shell' folder to what is displayed in Display Properties when you try to apply the theme . 5 . ) Now that you've changed the 'Shell' folder name to correspond with the visual styles name, reapply the theme . 6 . ) Go to Add/Remove Programs, and she works . Here's a snip from the post: Unreal II was originally due to hit shelves before the end of the year, but suspicions of a delay arose back in August when we received a release date list from Infogrames that had the title penned in for March 2003 . Response to our reports on the hold up at the time (see here and here) was inconclusive, with the news piece being labelled "a rumour" and the publisher unable to enlighten us with concrete details . However, the recent arrival of yet another release date list has prompted further investigation, as Unreal II's arrival is now listed as February/March 2003 . Identities switching failure in Outlook Express after installing Windows XP SP1 In another new problem that has popped up with SP1 in XP, you cannot switch identities in Microsoft Outlook Express after you install the service pack (For example, if you click Switch Identity on the File menu, click the identity that you want to switch to, and then click OK, the main identity is opened instead of the one that you want to switch to) . Microsoft has acknowledged this problem and posted a work-around, as listed below: To work around this problem, configure Outlook Express to prompt you for an identity at startup: In Outlook Express, click File, point to Identities, and then click Manage Identities . Click to clear the Use this identity when starting a program check box . Click Close . After you complete this procedure, you are prompted to select an identity each time you start Outlook Express . At this time, you can switch identities; however, you are prompted two times to switch to a new identity . I spotted this over at a another news site: If your IBM harddrive emits the "click of death" i . e . when you give the harddrive power it just clicks in an endless loop . Gently slam the harddrive against something hard, this will cause the read/write head to move into the correct position and your harddrive might now function, I just verified this with an old dead IBM 60GXP harddrive I had lying around Asus BIOS updates Asus have released some new beta BIOS files for the following motherboards: Asus Bios P4B533-V 1005 - 03 Beta Asus Bios P4T533-C 1008 - 01 Beta Asus Bios P4S533-VM 1008 Final (=1008 - 03 Beta) Asus Bios P4S533-E 1007 - 05 Beta Asus Bios A7V333 1014 - 01 Beta Asus Bios A7V333 1013 Final (=1013 - 03 Beta) Asus Bios A7S266-VM 1003 - 01 Beta Asus Bios TUA266 1004 - 10 Beta Asus BIOS updates ( . asuscom . de/support/techmain/technical . htm?ctn4" target="_blank">www . asuscom . de) Microsoft buys Rare CNN is reporting ( . cnn . com/2002/09/20/news/deals/rare/index . htm" target="_blank">money . cnn . com) that Microsoft has bought British based developer Rare, and have also retained the licenses that Rare created . Rare, though, will retain rights to the characters it created independently, including the "Perfect Dark," "Conker" and "Banjo-Kazooie" franchises . GeForce 4 Ti: Which Version Delivers The Most Bang For Buck Extremetech has posted up a guide that will help you wade through the quagmire that is the GeForce 4 family and which one will give you the best bang for your shopping buck . Here's a snip: NV18 and NV28 are imminent, which will add AGP 8X support to GeForce 4 MX and Ti, and of course, the next flagship GPU, NV30 is also headed toward final production . But in the meanwhile, board makers of nVidia-based products have begun to aggressively cut prices in an effort to stimulate demand for the GeForce 4 Ti-based offerings . A recent search on PriceWatch found 128MB Ti 4600 boards for as little as $235, a far cry from the $399 premium nVidia and its board partners could command a short while ago . But with NV30 just around the corner, and a little tsunami named Radeon 9700 soon becoming widely available, boards using GeForce 4 Ti GPUs are going at near fire sale prices .
