81521 2002-09-20 22:36:00 depends on what you need ;-)

it depends on the distros a bit.....but .....
first thing is to get enough RAM.

81522 2002-09-21 01:45:00 Well it will mainly be Redhat and Mandrake and Peanutlinux in GUI mode (kde)
How much ram is enough?
I'm thinking about 256mb.

81523 2002-09-21 01:53:00 256 will be ok. tweak'e (174)
81524 2002-09-21 01:55:00 That should be ample. You will have noticed that Linux uses less memory that that otherOS.;-)

Open a terminal window and run top in it. That will show you your memory use and CPU load as you work ... it's very interesting.

81525 2002-09-21 02:15:00 unless you compare it to win95. try finding an operating system (with gdi) that can run on 16meg ram ;-)

81526 2002-09-21 02:28:00 I've run Linux with X-Window on an 8MB machine. (Not the latest versions with KDE/Gnome).

GEM ran nicely in 2MB.

81527 2002-09-21 02:51:00 I'm running with 256MB and no swap without problems.

It never seems to actually use more than about 100mb, the rest just gets use as disk buffers/cache.

81528 2002-09-21 03:04:00 With RH7.2, I increased memory on my "fast" P120 from 32 to 96MB. I was using a SCSI drive as swap. I pulled out the drive, and Linux didn't care. ;-) That's using Gnome from time to time. (I eventually made a /swap file, but it doesn't use it much.) Graham L (2)
