| 82018 | 2002-09-22 09:14:00 | Hi, Everytime I try to connect to the net my computer doesn't dial up instead I get an error message saying no dial tone. I have tried different jack points in the house and different phone connection leads and have also used a different isp trying to connect but no luck. I have phoned my isp and they have checked all the settings etc and have said it is not the fault of the isp which I'm inclined to agree since I have tried another isp and the same prob. And I have another computer in the house and no probs with that one. Can anyone help me please. |

| 82020 | 2002-09-22 09:28:00 | Hi Caro, Sometimes this happens when the wrong cable is plugged into the modem. Not all phone cables use the same wiring as what most modems use. Another cause can be that message minder type tones are not understood by the modem as dialtone. beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep(you have a message does not = dial tone) There is a tick box somewhere in dial up properties saying "wait for dial tone", untick this, and it may dial out anyway, even without anything that resembles dial tone. I can't remember exactly where you find this setting as i don't use a dial up connection these days. |

Go to Control Panel phone and modem properties, or something similar (go to Printers and Other Hardware in XP) then go to modems select your modem click properites and then click Diagnostics then query modem cheers :) |

| 82026 | 2002-09-22 13:26:00 | Hi... Nathanthekind has a point... Try a "clean"... My PCI internal modem would not work, until I removed it and "cleaned" (or rather wiped) the slot tabs with cotton buds. It had been in my PC for 2.5 years, from new, without ever any use, until I joined a ISP 2 months back and this PCWorld message board...Diagnostics in Control panel had confirmed that it was finally alive... Though not sure if wiping the tabs or just reinserting the modem caused it to work by re-establishing itself with Windows (WinSE)... |

To check your dialing rules right click on your internet connection and select properties then click the dialing rules icon. I'm assuming you are using XP. A simple way to test this would be to disable dialing rules by unchecking it. |
