81984 2002-09-22 07:16:00 Fresh install of WinXP Pro, SP1 applied, Media player is as slow as a wet week to open files, when a local file, avi or mpg etc, is opened it totally locks my machine solid for up to 5 mins before the file will finally open and play, any ideas folks?

Cheers, Jeff.

81985 2002-09-22 09:45:00 Hey, I had the same problem. Microsoft gave me these things to check and I have never had any further problems:

1.Memory: Media Player uses hell of memory. You might want to add more memory to your hardware. XP pro requires 128MB RAM but trust me, that is not enough specially if you are trying to play a video clip or something.

2.Media Player X 2: Check if you have two media players running at the same time. Press Cntrl + Alt + Del and you will find the task manager. Look under processes for two instances of wmplayer. If this is so, try switching one of them off.

3.Network: If your computer is networked, it can sometimes take longer to load up the wmplayer.

Try these man.

81986 2002-09-23 08:48:00 Ok, 512mb of Ram, so it ain't the first one, it ain't the second one, but yup, the third one is something to do with it alright, tried again today and the machine is not connected to my network and I had no probs, wierd. Dak2 (1963)
81987 2002-09-23 09:15:00 I'm glad I'm not the only one. It plays ok, but just takes forever to start.

See This Thread (pressf1.co.nz) for my experiences.

I have disabled my network without any joy, have 384 meg ram now (was 256 until yesterday), and it happens in any media player, including Windows Media Player.

81988 2002-09-23 11:42:00 Hmm, gets wierder again, mine was working fine for a while with no network connections, but now it has gone back to being as slow as. Dak2 (1963)
81989 2002-09-23 13:01:00 I managed to get it working as it should..... but the following settings reset themselves :-(

Click Tools, then Folder Options.

Click the File Types Tab, scroll down till you get to MPEG and MPG etc.

Highlight one, click Advanced

You will see "Open" and "Play". Carry out the next for both of these.

Click Open, then Edit, then untick "Use DDE". Do the same for Play.

If you leave the Edit File Type Window open, it plays instantly. For some reason it resets if you click OK to close this window. After saying this however, and trying a few more time before I posted this, it paused again....

... and on we go, in a search for the solution. I think the DDE part has something to do with it.

81990 2002-09-23 21:59:00 I went back to an older edition which while not as falsh went fast and didnt take for ever to load mind you I am still on 98 sec edition as well kiwibeat (304)
81991 2002-09-24 00:11:00 You cannot remove Media Player from XP, or revert to an earlier version (not that I can see anyway). I tried renaming the executable, but it just replaces it.

I have solved the problem, by opening Media Player, clicking Tools / Options / Performance, click restore defaults then slide video acceleration back one notch. This works, BUT when I now go back into that option it has reset back to full acceleration but still plays fast... go figure.

81992 2002-09-24 07:05:00 Hmmmmm, OK, yup those above fixed mine, mine is doing exactly the same, but, if I go into add remove windows components, I can remove Media Player no problems. Dak2 (1963)
