81827 2002-09-21 23:25:00 I have Win98 (I live in the deep south), my sister left at short notice for overseas and left her 3mth old HP computer with Windows XP (I presume) and HP 840c printer with Mum and Dad (living in Nelson) to use. The computer sat in the corner while Mum and Dad pretended to ignore it, but got the courage to use it for emailing. Printed things off no problem for a week or so, then the printer just printed out faint goobledegook well that what Dad says it is and lots of blank paper. A friend of theirs uninstalled the printer then reinstalled, now the printer prints emails, the Page 2 first and perfectly, but Page 1 comes out next, but only prints lines of dots. The dots appear to be where the lines of printing should be. They have printed a sample page (prints out no problem) and replaced the cable. Hhhmmm, no improvement. Knowing nothing about 'system restore' available on WinXp. If they took the computer back to before they got it from my sister would this rectify the problem. Is 'system restore' easy to use, that I can guide them through over the phone. (We did that learning to email - exhaustion at each end of the phone). Mum and Dad are in their mid 80s, so are REAL 'newbies'. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks so much, Heather Heather J (815)
81828 2002-09-21 23:34:00 Hi Heather.

It sounds like the drivers for the printer are perhaps not the XP ones?.

XP ones are available here (www.hp.com) but thats not a lot of help really. I wonder if anyone on the forum lives nearby that could assist, as its likely only a matter of reloading the driver. It is odd that it does page 1 ok, I must admit.

81829 2002-09-22 00:15:00 i hate printers, well sometimes i do

My pet hates are power management that crashes computers, and printers that work fine one day and then, when you really need to print, they produce something like this.

Having the right drivers for the OS helps
So does a sufficiant amount of RAM

I once "fixed" a computer/HP printer that was intermittantly doing that with a RAM upgrade.. I didn't mean to, the problem just went away when the RAM went from 32 to 128. I wasn't even trying to fix the printer, I had stated catagoricly that i didn't want to know about the printer.
When i got e-mail asking what i had done to the printer, i expected to be held responcible for the latest drama, but no, all was good. In the end the printer died a natural death of being a cheap peice of plastic that ground itself to death in the next 6months of near constant use. The replacement had no problems.

81830 2002-09-22 04:36:00 Thanks for the help. hhhmm, it is very strange that it was printing fine to start off with. I wonder if they clicked something , not knowing that they did click, like you tend to do when you first get a computer, that they inadvertently changed something.
Any more ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks

81831 2002-09-22 06:16:00 If you are fairly PC literate yourself you could install a program that allows you to access their machine over the internet, have a look around it and fix things up yourself.

J ZEP did this not long ago with her friend in Oz and as far as I know it worked brilliantly. If it interests you then I'm sure she will be happy to provide the details.

81832 2002-09-22 06:40:00 Thanks for the vote of confidence Susan, but no, I am 'sort of computer literate' and that sounds a bit 'deep' for me. A friend who I was telling them about the problem (also lives in the deep south) muttered about spooling, and such scary things which would be beyond Mum and Dad.
Thanks Susan for the suggestion, much appreciated.

81836 2002-09-22 22:02:00 Hello Heather,

I have a 70 year old mother who got herself into a bit of a mess with a printer, and xp.

It turned out that there was heaps of printing instructions, sittin in the printer spool, which was confusing the computer. how on earth she did it Ill never know, but I suspect that when she clicked print, there is a lag until the printer starts, thinking it wasnt working, she kept hitting the print button, and the computer kept logging the instruction.

It might be worth a check. click start, control panel, click ' switch to classic view in the left panel.(if required) find the printer and fax icon,
and double click. Right click the printer icon, and click open.

if there are any printing instructions here, click 'printer' and then click cancel all documents.

Good luck,

Bob
