81915 2002-10-02 05:50:00 Hope your break was a nice one . :-)

Windows CDs are always marked as far as I know so it looks like you either don't have one or you've mislaid it .

What computer have you got, and where did you get it? It's possible that you have a recovery disk instead of the Windows disk and I'm not familiar with how to add/remove Windows components with recovery disks .

If someone else doesn't jump in here and offer advice then I'll try and find out for you . But don't worry, we won't abandon you!

81916 2002-10-02 10:24:00 Hi guys, go to Windows Explorer, then C:\windows\options\cabs - you may have your Windows setup files there. Most computer companies stick them in their, espcially recovery disks. xtraka (1984)
81917 2002-10-03 05:02:00 Thanks Guys. I have Win ME from PC Co., and have a Recovery Disc. I have tried to have a look at it but can't get past the second step in the programme. No matter what I type in I get 'the file word cannot be found'
I have tried your advice Xtraka, thanks, but will you please spell it out in language that a duffer can follow.
I have reached the stage where I will do without 'Paint' and 'Wordpad' but I should have those programmes even if I don't use them.

81918 2002-10-03 22:03:00 Sorry Charlie but I've reached the end of my experience with a system like yours so I'm hoping that someone else will be able to take over now.

If not then I'll put a call out for help elsewhere.

81919 2002-10-04 04:53:00 The files will probably be in a .CAB file, even in a PC Company recovery CD. But they will have all such files in a hidden directory. Load the CD (without booting it) and set Properties to display all files. Then once you have found a path for the CAB files, you should be able to use My Computer|Add Remove Programmes|Windows ... then Applications, Details, and find Paint. If it complains that it can't find the file, use Browse, and go to the directory on the CD. If this doesn't work ...

The PC Company WinMe recovery CD has an option to "repair" rather than reinstall Windows which is alleged to not destroy your settings or "lose" software you have installed. It lost software the first time I did it on a friend's machine, didn't the second. :_|

Messy, isn't it? ;-)

81920 2002-10-06 09:00:00 Charlie, did you see the thread here (pressf1.co.nz)?

I'm hoping that one of the suggestions will be of some help to you, maybe the last one from Alan Cottrell.

If you need more info, post your question in that thread rather than here so that people will know what you are talking about.
