81794 2002-09-21 20:33:00 I am unable to get my Win2000 SP2 machine to see the network (peer to peer) when accessing via a Linksys 8 port switch. Led's indicate all is well on switch and on NIC but nothing can be seen outside of the NIC. Running TCP/IP. Other Win 98 machines OK with similar Realtek NIC's. I find that the Win2000 PC will work to a 10Mb port on a hub attached to the Linksys switch but not directly to a 100Mb port. It appears at a physical and data level (leds on NIC and switch indicate that they are detecting each other but no data transfer. no session) there is compatibility but nothing to be seen in browser, will not ping other PC's, and 'net view' delivers only the local PC. Tried many other drivers, other PCI slots, still no luck. Set port speed to Auto Detect or 100Mb has no effect. wombat (1191)
81795 2002-09-21 21:05:00 I'd put money on it not being the switch.

When did the problem happen, after SP2 was installed? You might want to consider reinstalling the ethernet card drivers over the top.

I've seen incompatibilities between 10/100 switches and some cards but it sounds like the same card (is it exactly the same, you say similar).

It's definitely working on another hub/switch?

81796 2002-09-21 22:32:00 Realtek NICs can be real dogs with Windows sometimes. If I was you before getting carried away trying to fix it get/borrow a NIC that is neither realtek nor NE2000 based (say 3Com for instance) and install that in the 2000 machine. Quite often you will find a crappy piece of hardware will work on Win 9x but not on 2000. 2000 is much more particular about what it will use than 9x. John Grieve (367)
81797 2002-09-21 23:16:00 Yup, I'm with John on that. robo (205)
81798 2002-09-22 02:49:00 The NIC is a Realtek RTL8139 /810X Family Fast. Ethernet as listed on the Microsoft compatibility for Windows 2000 list????
The original OEM Win2000 software came with SP2.
Tried the newest and older drivers....still a problem. Despite the information accompanying the cards claiming Win 2000 compatibility they are not Win2000 100Mb capable. The cards I have tried are different suppliers and the boards are different but both use the RTL8139D chipset.

81799 2002-09-22 03:49:00 It could be that the computer is a bit slow for this card to work at 100Mbps. I suspect that these cheap Ethernet cards are like "Winmodems" which use the CPU for processing and motherboard-memory, rather than being independent, with their own resources.

There is a reason why the 3Com and other "name" cards cost more: they are better.

81800 2002-09-22 08:25:00 I have a great deal of experience with networking hardware because for the last 3-4 years I have run Lans at home every 2 weeks for up to 16 people. I have seen every NIC for sale in NZ plus a few that are not and now have these fixed rules for those that wish to attend one of my Lans.

1 - No Realtek NICs
2 - No Ne2000 NICs
3 - No generic NICs
4 - 3Com NIC required

These rules have resulted in trouble free Lans for the last 2 - 3 years. IBM have a range called Netfinity and I have just started allowing these cards to as they are great.

The most important things to remember with networking are "It's bloody complex for the hardware thus requiring the hardware be made properly" and "Cheap networking hardware is not made properly".

81801 2002-09-22 08:54:00 john- what about intels? very good lan cards but bloddy exspencive. tweak'e (174)
81802 2002-09-22 09:02:00 You are right Tweak'e. Intel is fine to. 2 of my machines have Intel networking built into the motherboard and its great. Must admit though I can only remember one Intel card in all the Lans so far so they must be real expensive. John Grieve (367)
81803 2002-09-22 10:19:00 yep really expensive. if i remember right they are over $100 for an OEM card.(as a comparison you can get cheap 10/100 lan cards for $25). it has more adjustments than i know what to do with (and is bootable) tweak'e (174)
