| 82237 | 2002-09-23 05:11:00 | can anyone tell me how to change a hard disk letter in win98 cauz i have 2 hard disk c:/ is 4gb d:/ is 10 gb i want to swap the letters cauz when i try to re-install win98 the NOT ENough disk space window pops up says " disk c: only has 9.9 mb of freee space you will need 14.5 mb to set up windows 98" i dont know why it says that it should detect d:drive in setup because thats where ma windows is installed |

| 82238 | 2002-09-23 05:47:00 | Windows wants to be on drive C: There may be ways around that, but i wouldn't recomend putting doze anywhere else. The only solutions are to move files from drive C to D, thus creating the gig of space you need to set up 98 (yes you need a a lot more than stated, and it will soon bloat to a gig or so) or Change the jumpers on the drives, so that the one with some room becomes the "master' and the other becomes the "slave' thus "swapping" C and D |

System files (to access an operating system) are, by default and design, installed on the boot partition which is always C since C is allocated to the first primary bootable partition on the first physical hard drive . System files in MS DOS and MS Windows include msdos . sys and io . sys (and command . com in versions excluding NT, 2K and XP) . Boot files (to start/boot the operating sytem) are installed on the system (ie operating system) partition . Windows does not have to be installed on the C drive, nor does the folder need to be named Windows . The option for to select another drive location and folder is early in the installation setup . Those of older ilk will recall that MS DOS does not permit any other location than C:\DOS . . . . . |

(Something about defaults and limitations . . . . . ) I really haven't bothered to install anything earlier than MS DOS 3 . 3 since I can't be bothered building a machine that has the specs required (parts are getting harder to locate) . Besides even Windows 1 . 01 or 1 . 03 (can't remember which) will run on MS DOS 4 . 01 so there is really little practical reason for going further back . FYI - yes I have copies of most MS OS from DOS 1 . 1 to 6 . 22 and from Windoze 1 . 01 onwards plus assorted manufacturers |

| 82243 | 2002-09-23 22:10:00 | can try using partition magic to increase the c: drive size but back up all data before hand. I always try to allocate at least 10 gigs for c: drive preferably more these days especially with cheaper HDD avaiable |
