82228 2002-09-23 02:56:00 I'm after some good books on Linux.

No need for them to focus on one particular distribution.

Any recommendations.

82229 2002-09-23 04:48:00 I've found that Red Hat Linux 7.2 Bible by Christopher Negus Published by Hungry Minds to be quite good. Maximum Linux Security Published by Sams was quite an interesting read as well. Gorela (901)
82230 2002-09-23 04:58:00 The "for dummies" books are always good value even if you know a bit already. IT people may laugh at you but once you get over that you realise they offer a lot of vaulable information. I learnt RED HAT and started my MCSE through those books. AND I'M PROUD TO SAY SO! (Although I'd never give you my real name! :) )
Also, try going to amazon.com and doing a search for linux. Find the books and read the user comments to get an idea of how good the book is. If you find one, go to your local bookstore that has a computer section and ask for the person that orders the computer books. They will be able to tell you if the book is available in NZ, if it's popular or what your alternatives are.

I am currently reading "Red Hat Linux for Dummies" compliments of the local library. In my case the title is very applicable. I am trying to find a book on SuSE without much luck.

Techbooks (http://www.techbooks.co.nz/) in Auckland has a good selection of linux books that can be ordered on line.

82232 2002-09-23 06:28:00 If you have the basics down then the most extensive linux resource in print that I have found is "Linux Complete" and is available at whitcoulls, Paper+ and London Bookshop.

The material is very dry and technical, but it is the must-have reference guide.

82233 2002-09-23 06:46:00 And the free books on line. Have a look at the local mirror (dunedin.lug.net.nz). In the Guides section, have a browse in The Linux Cookbook, and the "Linux Gazette" online magazine. Then go to www.ibiblio.org for the Linux User's Guide by Larry Greenfield (there's a link "other" in the Guides section. Graham L (2)

82235 2002-09-23 13:23:00 Jen,

Suse 8.0 comes with a couple of manuals if you purchase it. The distro has a number of books as well as the usual man pages on the CD.

Also they are releasing 8.1 in Europe now, so it probably won't be to long before it arrives at Dr Floppy.

82236 2002-09-24 02:36:00 If you can't find a particular book I would recommend Borders, they have a huge range and if they don't have it they will order it for you. BarryMcQ (1578)
