82141 2002-09-22 21:18:00 I have just upgraded a PII 350 from '98 to XP Pro. All went fine till I checked the device manager & saw that Com 1 & 2 have been disabled.
I then try to log on to the net with a PCI Lucent winmodem to get the updated drivers...modem clicks like it is about to dial in but no number is dialled.
I then get an error msg that there is no dial tone present. The modem normally works 100% in a newer Athlon system. I tried rebooting, changing settings, spending 45min on the line to i-hug...all to no avail, it still refuses to dial, please help.
Many thanks

82142 2002-09-22 21:31:00 How much RAM have you got in your system? If you can even get your modem to dial, Win XP is going to be let down by the slow speed of your computer, and it may not be worth the upgrade to XP.

Did you do a fresh install of XP, or did you just install over the top? If the latter, then that might be what is causing the problems - XP is recommended (including by myself) to be installed on a fresh clean formatted hard drive. If this hasn't been done, all sorts of problems can arise.

82143 2002-09-23 02:59:00 Which really begs the question, "If your computer was running fine in the first place, why upgrade the OS?"

Secondly, did your computer come with driver installation disks, etc? It could be that your PC just needs the correct drivers installed... have you tried updating your drivers manually?

82144 2002-09-23 13:02:00 Hi I had exactly the same problem with my Dynalink modem. I went to their website from work and got the installation instructions. I think you'll have to follow the procedure as down below but yours will be for different makers. My pci modem (not the dynalink) gets recognised as an E-tech. You could also remove the modem via control panel/system/hardware and reboot.
V1456VQE-R1 DRIVER INSTALLATION
