| 82370 | 2002-09-23 23:29:00 | I'm going to be doing some study on the road using my laptop, but I regularly use the family desktop for receiving e-mails and downloading items from message boards. However, because Id be doing study on the road, I'd like to be able to sync a specific folder between the two PC's. Is it possible to do this, and would the software be free? Please excuse the ignorance on this subject, Never done synchronization stuff before Cheers Chilling_Silence |

| 82373 | 2002-09-24 01:11:00 | Its a long time since I used it (in Win 95) but "Briefcase" IS the folder from memory, and it will auto synchronise when networked with the "Briefcase" files auto-synch. However a 2 second look on Google suggests that Win 2k has "Offline files" which do exactly what you are wanting. Thus: The Offline Files feature doesn't require you to first copy or move the files into a separate location on your laptop (e.g., a Briefcase folder). When you enable Offline Files, Win2K spoofs the files' existence in their original locations on the server, so the files and their parent folders still appear to be online and available. However, the system maintains the collection of files that you've marked offline in a special folder called the Offline Files Folder, and uses this folder for synchronization with the server-based copies when the network becomes available. You can use at least three methods (e.g., viewing the Offline Files feature, launching the synchronization process, getting the current synchronization status) to access the Offline Files feature and its commands. Choose the Folder Options or Synchronize Options from the Windows Explorer Tools menu, right-click the Offline Files system tray icon and select the synchronization option, or launch the Synchronize shortcut by clicking Start, Programs, Accessories. |
