1289740 2012-07-20 22:13:00 Well yea common sense is you wont let a stranger into your house and leave them alone. Whats the point of having door locks if you going to let anyone in your house? Fact these people are supposed to be tradesmen makes very little differance in my perception of trust levels. coldfront (15814)
1289741 2012-07-20 23:22:00 While I do agree with you, coldfront, the main reason that I would stay home when a tradesman is present is to make certain that he does the job the way I want it done.

We had a builder in a few years ago who wanted to do things his way and if we were not present he would build it his way. He was a good tradesman but I had to watch all that he did otherwise he would not do things the way we wanted.

1289742 2012-07-21 00:23:00 Well as an ex trady I am going to put my side forward, yes I prefer people to be home, what I can't stand though and I have walked off jobs because of it is people watching over my shoulder breathing down my neck. Be home but at least give them the space to do the job gary67 (56)

I would never allow a tradesman to enter my home unless I was home. It is a good idea to be there so that you are on hand to discuss any problems that crop up. I usually have other things to do rather than stand there and watch his every move. I pop my head in occassionally to see how things are developing. I like to keep an eye on things without being intrusive.

1289744 2012-07-21 02:09:00 I would always be at home but you do have to let the tradesman/woman get on and do their job without getting underfoot. CliveM (6007)

Exactly but i have come across so many that do stand and stare all day, I have walked off jobs for that reason

Pretty lucky you're not a cricketer then. ;) (Rather like the Blackheads, who are also not cricketers, but spend a fair portion of the time walking off.)

Our rates:

Regular - $50 / hour
If you watch - $65 / hour
If you offer advice - $85 / hour
If you help - $100 / hour

1289748 2012-07-21 09:30:00 Looking at Pino-o-cleen's price list. My plumber charges about $50 per hour. Watching his ever move could mean that you are getting tips on how the professionals do it. Offering advise could be counter productive seeing as he should already know how to do things. If you knew how to do it better then surely you would not hire him in the first place.

At $50 an hour I prefer him to get on with the job so that I have to pay for less of his time. I usually help out after the job is completed by cleaning up the mess, this saves me money. He has done all the expert stuff that I pay him for but how many cleaners get paid $50 per hour.
