1290690 2012-07-25 08:49:00 I'm waiting in anticipation for the new EMUs next year. So am I :D Have you seen the mockups? pcuser42 (130)
1290691 2012-07-25 21:45:00 The voltages of the NIMT (Hamilton - Palmerston North) and Auckland are the same, but there's something to do with the current that makes the EF class incompatible - not entirely sure what. Don't know what they did at Onehunga - drive the truck up and down? :p

I guess there goes any hopes of getting the AK to HN section electrified then.. More NZ small mind thinking

As stated, the voltages are the same, it would just take sone modification of the NIMT system to bridge the gap and some new locomotives. That said, the mentioned gap is the flattest section in the country... pcuser42 (130)

I have seen the pictures on http://www.aktnz.co.nz/ Is that what you mean? Or is there a life size mock up somewhere?

There is a life-size mockup of some parts of the train, although I'm not sure if this been opened up for "wander in" viewings (it was on the wharf if you were quick). pcuser42 (130)

Which is fine until someone in the Middle East farts in a big way and the oil dries up.. We'll be thankful for the NIMT electrification..

True, but in the medium term there's not much point in closing the gap.
