1290680 2012-07-24 23:11:00 Railway enthusiasts - and others - will have noticed the work going on around the Auckland suburban network. Many of the poles that will support the catenary for the new EMUs have been erected and some of the catenary is in place. I understand that the new EMUs will be arriving next year, but before that some tests will need to be carried out on the new installations.

I was told that the railways may be bringing up one of the class 30 locomotives for the testing. Is that true? If that is correct it would be great to get some shots of a 30 locomotive on the Auckland network.

If the rumour is correct is there someone in the know who might be able to tell us when this is going to happen?

Your help will be greatly appreciated.:thanks

1290683 2012-07-25 03:25:00 No, the Class 30s (technically the EF class) will not be brought up to Auckland as they are incompatible with our electrification system. While they do occasionally come up here behind diesel locomotives, they only come to use the wheel lathe at Westfield. :p

The catenary on the Onehunga branch has already been tested, and this was done with a hi-rail truck with a pantograph fitted.

1290685 2012-07-25 05:21:00 Thanks so much, pcuser. Very informative.

Why are the class 30s incompatable? Is the voltage different?

Interesting to hear that the Onehinga branch has been tested. What did they do? What did the tests entail?

1290686 2012-07-25 05:48:00 By EF class are you meaning those old DC powered units from Wellywood??No, they (EF Class) are the locos used on the electrified section on main north trunk which are 25 kV AC. The Wellywood units are 1500V DC. Iantech (16386)
1290687 2012-07-25 06:14:00 The voltages of the NIMT (Hamilton - Palmerston North) and Auckland are the same, but there's something to do with the current that makes the EF class incompatible - not entirely sure what. Don't know what they did at Onehunga - drive the truck up and down? :p pcuser42 (130)

The trains that were withdrawn just a few weeks ago were the DM class, which are DC powered.

Thanks for that pcuser. Interesting indeed.:thanks

Perhaps, on the Onehunga line they may have been looking for dead spots?

I'm waiting in anticipation for the new EMUs next year.
