82514 2002-09-24 08:58:00 Hello all!
Have just picked up a 8 port switch and am starting to network, i have a basic idea of what needs to be done but have a few questions, anyways, what would the best protocol be? e.g. netBEUI, the network will be used for file, printer sharing, net sharing and some network games/parties. There will be three machines, a win95B 120mhz, a 98SE 133mhz, and a Athlon XP 2000+ XP machine. Apparently i've heard that with the windows XP CD in other machines and it makes setting up the network a hell of a lot easier but have no idea what to do with this, any help would be great.
Thanks
- David

Use TCP/IP - no need for the other protocols.

82517 2002-09-24 10:36:00 Check the FAQ, try just getting a crossover cable and setting up a network between just two, then implement the switch, making sure it still works, then 1 by one add computers and set them up!

Cheers

82518 2002-09-24 13:41:00 Use the win XP cd and run the networking wizard on each of the machines. You should then configure the network settings so the LAN works better. This web site should tell you pretty much everything you need to know.

I also reccomend adding the IPX protocol to support older games. Only bind tcp/ip to file/print sharing though. Use static IP address as this will solve alot of gaming problems.

82519 2002-09-25 01:41:00 If you have a hub or switch, don't get a crossover cable. Use the hub right from the start. Just plug only two machines into it for a start, then add them one by one.

If you don't need a crossover cable, never have one ... it is sure to trap you one day because it is not a standard cable, and you get caught when substituting cables as a fault finding technique. A crossover cable will cause confusion, and much bad language. Even when labelled ... labels fall off.
