82399 2002-09-24 00:34:00 How would i make my CD-Rw disc autorun and start an application on it. I downloaded MYOB and i would like to put it on a cdrw disc and make it autorun for the installer. how would I do that?I have heard that this process involves a notepad file or something. Any suggestions?

cheers,

82400 2002-09-24 00:48:00 Is MYOB a legal copy, or did you just download it from a Warez site or P2P?

82402 2002-09-24 02:28:00 VK,

Sorry, I had to ask :) I'm sure you understand :D

Anyways, back to business... If you look on another autorun CD you have you'll see a file in the root folder called something like "autorun.inf". Just copy that over and edit it to suit. It should contain something like this:

[autorun]
OPEN=SETUP.EXE
ICON=SETUP.ICO

If you set this correctly, with the "OPEN=" set to point at your install program (usually setup.exe) this should work. The "ICON" is set to display the correct icon, and isn't needed, but makes it look more professional I think.

82403 2002-09-24 02:29:00 I think you have to create a Autorun.inf file which from memory is the first file the DC-ROM drive looks for then tells the computer what to do eg. launch the setup file, unpack zip files etc. I think these can be made in Notebook but I'm not sure so don't quote me. I had a look at the autorun for Dungeon Siege disc one and it has the following....

[autorun]
open=setup.exe
icon=DS.ico

shell\setup=&Install Dungeon Siege
shell\setup\command=setup.exe

shell\directx=Install &DirectX 8.1
shell\directx\command=DirectX\dxsetup.exe

shell\adobe=Install Adobe &Acrobat Reader 5
shell\adobe\command=Adobe\rp505enu.exe

So Im Guesing that you would create one in Notepad with the following..

[autorun]
open=setup.exe

Then save it as Autorun.inf, then you include this file on the cd when you burn it. This will work providing the setup application you want to launch as called setup.exe and nothing else needs to be done like unpacking files etc.

This is all off the top of my head so please dont quote me I'm partly guesing here.

Hope this helps

82404 2002-09-24 02:29:00 PS I have no idea why the last half of my post is in bold as I didn't set anything to be bold anywhere in that post :) hmmm... must be a problem in the forum software ;)

82405 2002-09-24 04:21:00 Top marks everyone, correct.

Note, this only works with files in the root directory of the CD. ie, you can't make it autorun setup\custom\setup.exe

If this was the case, you would have to move setup.exe to the root directory of the cd and make the autorun command execute setup.exe

BTW Mike, I am sure you made that bold on purpose and are just pretending to have found a bug since you haven't in a while ]:) :D

82406 2002-09-24 05:20:00 G P: ... would it work with \setup\custom\setup.exe? The leading "\" to explicitly say "root of current disk" might be enough. This is the sort of thing which needsx an absolute path, rather than a relative one.

Just curious ... ;-)

82407 2002-09-24 06:08:00 According to Microsoft (msdn.microsoft.com) it would appear so. Although I know for sure that the shellexecute method is not fully supported. antmannz (28)
82408 2002-09-24 06:13:00 I haven't tried it per say, but it is my understanding that it must be the root of the drive full stop.

I will have a wee play with a rw disc.
