82486 2002-09-26 07:26:00 I'm sooo sorry, i've found the 'I/o device configuration' bit (down off the screen, where I didn't notice I could go to) and checked it and it's enabled, unfortunatly, which might mean that I have to wait for Casio to get back to me, any time soon! Trev0 (1995)
82487 2002-09-26 08:33:00 So according to the specifications the machine has one serial port and an installed modem using emulation on Com 3 - since the modem is a winmodem .

You say the personal organiser software installed on 98 - running on the same computer as the one now running XP that you have problems with? Your first post indicates that you have replaced your computer so did the organiser ever run on the new machine?

What assistance with HP since the specifications also state that the HP Pavilion 521a Desktop PC only comes with Windows XP installed?

The conclusions that I arrive at is that the machine running XP never had 98 installed and thus the organiser has never run on the new machine .
And that the organiser was recognised on a different machine that was running 98 and that that particular machine had two serial ports .
Further, unless the HP help desk can prove otherwise, the organiser will not work via a serial port on the HP unless the modem is moved to another port - either as a legacy device or as software device .

Solutions .
1 . Install 98 on a separate machine and connect the organiser to that, or
2 . Try a USB adaptor to connect the organiser to the XP machine, or
3 . Buy an organiser with USB connections, or
4 . Network a machine running 98 with the one running XP and install the organiser on the 98 then use a programme like Laplink to access the organiser and data .

82488 2002-09-26 21:21:00 You're right to conclude that I have never run w98 or the casio on this machine and the old w98 machine (which was a different comp) did run the casio organiser, sorry if one of my post's misled you.

I have rung Hp and they have had me check the bios settings by uninstalling both the printer and the modem ports in the ports section of the device manager and then restarting and the comp picking them up again. We then checked to see that the serial port was enabled, which it was. He then said the fault lay with casio and he couldn't do any more.

as far as I can tell the casio only has 3 wires inbetween it and the comp (looking like a headphone jack on the casio end).

So do you think I could plug it in a usb port? could I run off and buy a wire and everything sweet be again?

82489 2002-09-27 00:12:00 Speak with Casio regarding USB connections.

Also consider installing another com port in the HP - speak with HP regarding this and warrantees.

Alternatively, if you are using Outlook on the organiser, consider another machine running 98 and network it to the XP and share the Outlook address book and folders. Consider also using the second machine as - say - a print and file server.

82490 2002-09-27 03:01:00 Thanks Merlin and everyone else, I'll ring Casio, since they haven't replyed to my email yet.

I don't want to get another comp to continually fix.
I do have another parallel and serial port card here, but will it be any different to the one that's in it?

thanks again

82491 2002-09-27 04:21:00 Regarding installing another com port, check with HP and also, realise that the only spare slots (according to the specifications) are PCI slots and that most commonly available com/parallel port cards are ISA and will not fit .

Regarding a second machine - install, configure . . . . . . . . . don't tinker and problems are minimised .

82492 2002-09-27 04:40:00 Even if your serial and parallel card is a PCI one (such as a dolphinfast card) the Casio may not recognise the PCI emulated port as many legacy devices dont I have found.

I would think there is little chance the Casio will be able to be modified to USB, it sounds like a 3 wire serial implementation, and USB would probably need a new ROM program in the Casio itself, something that the devices do not support. (cannot download programs according to the review I read)

I agree with the comments of Merlin, that if you dont fiddle with a working configuration, there should be little maintenance.

I have looked up the Casio system on the web, it looks like it was older technology when released, which may be why it is poorly supported now.

82493 2002-09-27 10:49:00 Thanks Guys, but I'm definatly not getting another comp and if I were to get one, it wouldn't be one with w98 again!

I'm still waiting on casio, for their fix, but in the meantime maybe I'll look for another diary (made by someone else). It's bound to be better anyway and it may even be cheaper than the new software for this one!

Thanks for the help anyway, catch ya,
Trev

82494 2002-09-27 10:56:00 Whats the bet you grow old waiting for Casio!

I would still guess support would have ceased for a '99 product ( I am on my 4th dairy since 97) Palm Pilot Pro, Palm IIIe, Palm Vx, Toshiba e570....

82495 2002-09-28 21:36:00 Guess what?

I heard back from casio today and they said the original software IS compatable with XP, infact they wrote this:-

Thank you for sending your e-mail on SF-6700SY .

As FA-128 is compatible with WinXP,there should be
other problem(s) .

Pls try these:

1 . Pls check "COM Port" of PC and PCSync if they are the same .
(In case of PCSync, pls see [Casio] [Transmission Setup] .

2 . The COM port of your PC may be disabled or occupied by
something else .

If an application is running in the background
(You can see the icon on a task bar . )
and occupying the com port, pls disable and release it .

Unfortunatly I don't think anything is running in the background and also I downloaded and tried a 3rd party prog yesterday, and it worked just fine . Also unfortunatly that one is a 30 day trial and crippled .

So I'll bug them again with the low down, since they're now on the ball!
Thanks guys . . .
