82546 2002-09-24 10:15:00 Is it possible for a cracker to selectivly forward, from someone else's address book & computer, the "Bill Gates is giving away........." email? Have recently received two of these from two machines. Didn't recognise the second poster but emailed the first requesting my address be removed from his book.
This is part of his reply,"you will see that someone (not a virus)has accessed my address book. I have recieved emails back from several other people saying that the same has occurred to them in the last week or so. I operate a firewall and apparently this can still occur according to my servers security people. They also have had complaints about similar address book security breaches. Microsoft have a recent patch available to stop this apparently so am off to download ASAP."
Would appreciate comments from experts on whether above is possible.

82547 2002-09-24 10:38:00 rule one:
NEVER reply to spam NEVER EVER EVER

replying merely confirms that you exsist

it sounds like either viri or hoax to me, i would disregard it.

As for security.. well almost anything is possible, so update your anti virus and windows etc anyway, just to provide some kind of challenge for hackers!!

82548 2002-09-24 10:40:00 It now seems a good idea to also include the following, which was the first public reply.
"Email abuse
Firstly I wish to apologise for any one recieving this crap on emails bearing my email address-however it definitly has not originated on my computers. I have contacted police in regard to this as it would appear that my computer has been covertly accessed. To all that has recieved this my heartfelt apologises. You can rest assured as a business person I do not peddle or subscribe to this ****. The culprit will hopefully be found."

Is this kind of thing possible?

82549 2002-09-24 10:44:00 From memory some FW emails arrive with complete list of the email addys of everyone on the FW email . . . . . . .

If you reply to the FW email, you can either select to reply to just the sender, OR the complete list .

That could be a reason you are getting stuff from people who have full view of your email address . [B]Not a good idea to on-FW emails[B]

82550 2002-09-24 10:48:00 It is not uncommon for an email to be sent with a false name in the From field.
The Klez virus will do this, it will search all files on the computer, not just in the address book and the person with the virus does not know that it is sending messages with someone elses name in the from field as all returned mail gets sent to the unfortunate person which the virus decided to put in the From field.

Anyone can also change their email address in their mail program at any time so the from field shows someone other than the true sender. This makes it appear the email was sent from someone else and spam operators do this frequently.

82551 2002-09-24 10:50:00 Thx Chris. I never reply to spam. Now that I use Mail Washer, anything suspect just gets bounced right back to the sender.
The problem with the Bill Gates bogus email was that I recognised the sender & didn't bother reading the message before allowing it through to OE.
My second post may better explain what I'm curious about. I'm not entirely convinced the sender has been invaded. Being suspicious & cynical by nurture, I keep thinking his protestations of innocence just a tad overdone.

82552 2002-09-24 11:03:00 I checked the properties of the bogus email & there was a huge list of others who it had been sent to or had forwarded it.
There appears to be no effort to change the sender's [i.e. the guy who sent it to me] address.
Are you suggesting that a cracker could have changed his own address to that of the person who appears to have sent it?

82553 2002-09-24 11:19:00 This can be done by anyone, you can do this yourself.
If you go into the Accounts/Properties of your mail program you can change your email address there to someone else and when you send an email this other address will show in the from field.
It has nothing to do with crackers or hackers.

Email is not private, when ever you send an email or leave your address on a website or subscribe to a newsletter etc than it is possible that it will be noted by someone.

I don't understand why you are so concerned that someone else may know your email address, the only way for this not to happen would be if you never sent any emails.
When you get email such as the one you received just ignore it and delete.
Some people get 20 or 30 of these a day.

If you want to get some idea how your email address can be obtained have a look at this site.

82555 2002-09-24 11:37:00 I have some family members who spent some time grasping the fact that photos should be compressed before sending by email. My uncle once overloaded my email with a 2 Mb file of extremely large photos.

If you have problems downloading use a browser based email program to identify and, if necessary, delete the offending file before downloading.

ihug have a browser based program for their customers: webmail.ihug.co.nz
Check your own ISP to see if they have one.

It's also handy to know where it is located if you want to check email when away from your own computer - saves setting up a new machine for a once off check.
