83441 2002-09-26 05:34:00 I have an old pentium 100. when i try to load win98 in comes up 'you have performed an illegal op' When I try to boot from my floppy boot disk it says 'File missing or corrupted c:\cdrom\aoatapi.sys. Error in config.sys file in line 3. Any advise please. waynecarp (883)
83442 2002-09-26 05:43:00 Are you trying to install Win98? ?:|
Is the W98 CD booting, or are you getting the error before that?
The floppy problem is that config.sys is trying to load a driver for the CD off your hard disk. If the disk has been wiped, the file won't be there. ;-) It is best to have such drivers on the floppy, and the config.sys file edited to suit.

83443 2002-09-26 07:46:00 Hmm .... it's highly unlikely a P100 will be able to boot from a CD.

Go to a machine already running Win98 and create a fresh boot disk from there - it will create one with CDRom drivers on it; or go and have a look at www.bootdisk.com (http://www.bootdisk.com).

83444 2002-09-27 00:36:00 Not sure what caused the illegal operation error but 'File missing or corrupted c:\cdrom\aoatapi.sys. Error in config.sys file in line 3' indicates that aotapi.sys has been deleted or damaged, this file is needed to drive your CD ROM. Try to find your original CD Driver disk and reinstall it. Failing that search the internet for aoatapi.sys and copy it into c:\cdrom\ crozier (2004)
