83090 2002-09-25 09:50:00 When push comes to shove how much difference does the speed of the ram make?

Would I be better of with 512 megs of 266 ram or 256 of 333?

Cheers

83091 2002-09-25 10:03:00 it all depends on what chipset you have, what OS you have and what programs you use. tweak'e (174)
83092 2002-09-25 11:12:00 Ok then I am in the process of upgrading and trying to work out what to get .

Processor, an athalon 1800 on probably an Asus a7s333 or Abit kx7-333 motherboard .

Software, probably nothing not too heavy (ie not video editing)

operating system either win98se or win2000

cheers

83093 2002-09-25 11:21:00 unless you are overclocking the 333 will go to waste.

But it's always nice to have it

83094 2002-09-25 11:30:00 if you are getting a kt333 chipset then get 333ddr ram. how much depends on what you can aford. you can always add more later. tweak'e (174)
83095 2002-09-27 00:47:00 I just done what you're considering, I went for an Athlon XP 2000+ which was only about $40 dearer that the 1800+ . I kept my old DR266 RAM and bought a Chaintech7VJL motherboard ( . chaintechusa . com/eng/products/SOCKA/7vjl . asp" target="_blank">www . chaintechusa . com) from PCGamer . co . nz .

A really impressive combination at a very good price

83096 2002-09-27 02:20:00 Hmmm, yes, I have been watching PC Gamer's new PC Gear shop going up in Dunedin - can't wait till it officially opens as I only live two blocks away :) they have good gear at a good price.

83097 2002-09-27 09:47:00 Thanks for the comments.

I will go for 512megs of 333 memory. I can do the whole thing for about $750 which fits the budget (more or less).
