82989 2002-09-25 07:13:00 I've read that apart from backing up important files, address book etc
you should also backup updates incase you have to reinstall etc.

I've recently installed Windows XP, and downloaded some updates (to the annoyance of people trying to reach me by phone). What am i suppose to back up. This also applies to the office update (office XP).

82990 2002-09-25 07:16:00 If you manually downloaded the updates from the site and then installed the downloaded .exe files, just backup those files. If you automatically downloaded the updates (egthey installed themselves at the end of the update) then I don't thinkyou can back them up but I may be wrong.

I always get the manual updates

82991 2002-09-25 07:25:00 How do you get manual updates?

I know when i downloaded my drivers there was a prompt to save to computer or open file (something like that) so i saved to computer and copied it to my CD/R. I didn't get this when i did the downloads for Win XP updates.

For manual updates for windows o/s start at the Windows Update Catlog (v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com)

For Windows XP get hold of a copy of the Service Pack 1 (you may not want to download at approx 130Mb)

82994 2002-09-25 08:25:00 JM - the corporate update site no longer supports XP or 2000. For XP and 2000 updates you must use the windows update catalog as Babe said.

82996 2002-09-25 08:58:00 I can never remember the catalog address and just click the link on the corporate site. -=JM=- (16)
82997 2002-09-25 09:25:00 There was/is a way in Win98 to back up updates, but Im not sure if it works with XP. You have to remember though to do the procedure, I usually forget or cant be bothered :)

The update files from MS are downloaded to c:\windows\temporary internet files\ content.ie5 folder or a similar temporary folder like that. They wouldnt be difficult to find.
Immediately after installation, copy the files to another folder so that they dont get deleted.

{Incidently why am I getting a "null" when trying to preview a post???? I thought that problem had been solved}

The short answer is no. It is not easy for you to do when you do an update/download through Windows Update. As I said earlier get hold of a copy of Service Pack 1 for WinXP. MS NZ may have them available for a small $.
