83024 2002-09-25 07:27:00 Hi,
I need some advice.
I have an old computer (celeron 550mhz) and have just purchased a Athlon XP 1800, i need some advice on which OS to use.
On the old PC, i have WIN 98 - and i want to keep this on it, and the new one came with WIN ME,
I don't no whether to keep ME on it, put 98 ( i have a spare CD) on it or purchase XP?
I'm planning to network them up, so if they need the same OS i'll put 98 on it, i also plan to use games and want a stable OS.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Alex

83025 2002-09-25 07:41:00 Hi Fergie, If you can afford XP then I would go for it if not then 98 seems a good choice . However as of my understanding you need not just a spare 98 CD but you will also need another license for it to be able to legally install it on your second machine .

Failing both of those ideas there is nothing actually wrong with ME, all OS's have their pros and cons, it's just that ME doesn't seem to get cut a lot of slack by people .

But a XP upgrade would be best IMHO .

A FAQ about networking can be found here . ( . co . nz/thread . jsp?forum=1&thread=21674" target="_blank">pressf1 . co . nz)

Hope this helps

83026 2002-09-25 08:31:00 You won't need a seperate license for the second PC unless you plan to use them both at the same time (even then I don't think MS will worry about it).

Win XP would be the way to go if you can afford it - it's a good powerful stable OS, and I'm guessing sooner or later you won't be able to get Win software that will run on Win 9x (didn't take long to happen to Win 3.x and DOS). I run Win XP Pro and have had very few problems with it (the problems I have had were cause by myself trying to fiddle too much!)

Win ME is fine too - I prefer that over Win 98 - I had less hassles with it. All three will network to each other fine, you shouldn't have any problems there.

83027 2002-09-25 08:43:00 Hi,
Thanks alot for your comments.
As i'm a bit short of $$$$ at the moment, would it be much of a hassle to keep ME in the mean time, then a few months later install WIN XP when i can afford it.
What happens when you upgrade OS's (i've never done it before) do you lose all your settings? does the HDD get wiped??
Cheers

Quite wrong Mike, tthe OS has never had the options of two installs like Office does, where its allowable under some conditions.

If you read the EULA its been like that since ... for ever!

83029 2002-09-25 11:37:00 There should be no hassles running Windows ME, it's a good OS.

As for upgrading - back up everything, and wipe the drive before upgrading the OS. That way you leave behind any bugs etc. that were present before the upgrade, and you start fresh. That's not just for going to XP, but upgrading any OS.

Ah, you are so right, GF, I was thinking about the "freedom" Office offers and relating it to Windows. My mistake <crawls under small rock >

I got up to page 8475 and don't think I got to that bit yet... I'll let you know when I find it :D

83031 2002-09-26 01:10:00 OS decisions, decisions.

Some games don't like XP (as I found out - cos its based on NT,Win 2000) so if you plan to use it mainly as a games machine avoid XP. XP is nice although I have just loaded Win 2000 Pro as my evaluation version of XP has timed out.

83032 2002-09-26 04:11:00 Use win 98 on both of them. Does it realy matter whether it is legal or not?

83033 2002-09-26 08:08:00 What games don't run on XP? I've had no problems with it, except on really old (eg DOS based) games, and that's to be expected. I run those games on my DOS based PC :)
