| 82932 | 2002-09-25 06:13:00 | Hi there, Recently the following message has appeared on my computer: "Terminating thread due to a stack overflow problem. A VxD, possibly recently installed has consumed too much stack space - Inc, the setting of 'MinSPs' in SYSTEM.INI or remove recently installed VxD's. There are currently 5 Sps allocated". The computer doesn't crash and does allow me to continue. However I am wondering what it means. Is it a concern? I have been experiencing shutdown problems recently. Could there be any connection? Many thanks for your time and thoughts. Johnny Talofa |

| 82934 | 2002-09-25 06:25:00 | Any error message is a concern. But that's not too serious. A stack is an area of memory where system information is stored. Something tried to go outside the area allocated, and it was stopped. It could cause crashes, and it would be a good idea to fix the problem. "Find" System.ini, and edit it with Notepad : look for MinSPs and change the number from 5 to 6 (or 7 or 8?). Then Save, and Exit. Restart, and that problem should be gone. ;-) |

| 82935 | 2002-09-25 08:03:00 | oh yay, my university knowledge is actually good for something..... specifically, a stack is a type of data structure. A FILO structure (first in, last out). Nodes are "pushed" onto a stack and "popped" off it. There will be a certain amount of memory allocated for any given stack, and when too many nodes are pushed onto the stack, you get an overflow.... Imagine pushing 5 cent coins into a tube. Try to push in too many and you get overflow at the top, and you can't get to the ones at the bottom until you take the top ones off first, hence first in last out... Doesn't help you with your problem though does it? |
