That's got to be the biggest problem..

Lets all forward a joke with 20 e-mail addresses at the top, to 20 other people, who forward it to 20 other people, still with the original 20 and now more addresses at the top.. If it was a real good one (it happens) it might get to several million people with 100 totally doomed e-mail addresses at the top.

I have a separate e-mail address i use for people who like to forward jokes with addresses still visible. Unfortunately i was only able to find out who these people are, by seeing who abused my old address in this manner.

Chris's frequently repeated hints on how to be a good netizen..
(for anyone that listens)

1.If your bulk emailing use the BCC field for the recipients addresses, this prevents the e-mail addresses from being seen by the recipients.
2.Have the courtesy to remove any e-mail addresses you have been sent, it is possible to copy the bits that matter into a new e-mail. If it's not worth doing this, it's not worth forwarding

That is all
Chris.

83738 2002-09-28 00:07:00 Yes, when I get a good joke from someone, or something else I want to forward on, I usually cut and paste whatever into a whole new email.

I remember a few weeks ago, I got one of those emails from people who were stupid enough to believe that if they on-fwd 20 emails, they would get 2.5 million dollars from Bill Gates. What I did was added a para at the top about Hoax emails, and they had just been suckered in etc, etc, etc.... then I clicked send to everyone. This then went to over a 100 different people who's email addy was visible on the header.

Thinking about it later, it was probably a BIG mistake, as I am sure there were the addy of professional spammers hidden in the list that I on-fwd to. These type of emails are just another way spammers use to gather email addresses.

83739 2002-09-28 01:32:00 I don't understand how you can get notified about the prizes you've won if you havn't got a 'real' email addy in your profile. :O mark c (247)

you can have your real address in there <<-- IDG will not leak or sell your email addy to people.

But you can set your email address to be hidden in your profile. So that the general public can't see it.

Also avoid typing your email address out in full in a post at the forums instead of spam@spam.com use "spam at spam dot com".

Though I think that spam bots will know how to pick that up now.

83741 2002-09-28 05:56:00 I get about 6-8 spams a day on a Hotmail account and that has been the same level since i get the account about three yaers ago.....

on the topic of spam I had an interseting problem with spam when i changed ISPs.
I was with zfree and then i rang IHUG to ask for an account with them which was setup quickly and with no problems.
the odd thing was that in less than a week i was getting spam in my IHUG account and it had my FULL NAME (middle inital too) in the message........
I had not told anyone i had a new email address, i had not told anyone the address, i had not typed it into any websites or told anyone.

did IHUG sell my info?
was IHUG's system hacked to get my info?

I rang the help desk and had a long rant at them only to be told I "was mistaken and it must have been my fault"

anyone have any problems like this??

BTW after that phone call to IHUG the spam stoped.......

83742 2002-09-28 06:05:00 Ihug had (has?) a list of customers web sites
it reads thus
homepages.ihug.co.nz/~customer-login

customer-login@ihug.co.nz is a spamable address

i also noticed that there were some that were addressed allusers(?)@ihug (or was it users@ihug?)

83743 2002-09-28 06:10:00 I never thought of that
but it still leaves the question of where they got my full name from??

83744 2002-09-28 06:20:00 Very good question..
I NEVER got any spam addressed to me by correct name through any of my ihug addresses, so that one remains a mystery to me
