83727 2002-09-27 21:58:00 Why are you surprised, Chris? Bruce has warned us plenty of times not to publish our emails on here due to the harvesters roaming around all the time.

I have published my Hotmail addy on here once or twice and it's clearly visible on the mugshot page but I still only get up to 20 spams in that account per day. Mind you, they are the ones that the filters have missed. :D

83728 2002-09-27 22:11:00 Just wondering if someone out there didn't like you (for whatever reason) and visited one of those sites ;) then there is nothing stopping them adding your email addy to that site so you get spammed. Doesn't sound like it would be high on the "ways to get revenge" but it would be annoying.

have you guys been upsetting a few people?

83729 2002-09-27 22:14:00 I have two hotmail addresses, have had them both for a bit over a year now I guess . . . . The one I use for personal mail (ie the address only gets given to people I actually know) gets only 1 spam message .

It's the one where you can "get your phd, mba, bachelor and diploma from prestigious non-acredited universities . pay nothing now, no previous experience needed, everyone accepted . . . . "
always that message, but always from different senders . . .

anyway, the other address that I use for signing up to anything I feel like gets about 10-20 messages per day, mostly explicit content .

interesting too, coz my personal one is actually posted on my geocities website too, but it still gets less than the other .

Previous to these email addresses I had another hotmail one, but it ended up getting maybe 150-200 junk mails per day, so I threw in the towel, tossed my cuddly toys on the floor, chucked a tantrum and got a new address . . . .
since then no problems really .

83730 2002-09-27 22:28:00 I have been getting heaps of spam lately to my main xtra address (20-30 a day) and my compuserve address (5 a day, mainly dictionary spam) but practically none to my business xtra address.

It seems to be ralted to how loooonggg you have had an address, it seems to me.

I am now using Mailwasher (shareware made in NZ) which does a lovely job of bouncing ...

83731 2002-09-27 22:34:00 I have noticed in the past that some new PressF1 poster like to give out their home email addy in the post asking for direct contact. I imagine that they would be by now receiving more "interesting" email. All the regulars know to either post a disposable addy or break their web based email addy down to a format the bots can't pick up.

Perhaps PressF1 could automatically generate after registration an welcoming email to the new user with a helpful list of do's and don'ts on the forum. On the welcoming letter could be a link to "Help", "Search" and the "FAQS" as some people never seem to see those boxes. The hints could include that posting details of your OS and problem programs or hardware tends to get you help faster.

What do you think?

83732 2002-09-27 22:39:00 Susan,
The things i'm surprised about is how there is such a sudden increase, 10 spams between 1:00am and now, and most surprising is that my real address, which has been published here too, has never had spam.

83733 2002-09-27 22:51:00 Chris: maybe the bots have been busier than usual recently. Or as sam says, maybe someone (no names, but you won't have to think hard) has kindly signed you up somewhere.

Jen: that's an excellent idea, the email to newbies. Was just reading this (pressf1.co.nz) old page the other day and was wondering if I dare bring up the subject again. It wouldn't be a bad idea to at least give a reminder to people of these kinds of things and maybe a welcoming email to new people would be the way to do it.

83734 2002-09-27 23:11:00 Susan,
Maybe i would have to think hard at this unnatural time of the morning, but if it is who you suggest.... O well, how sad for it.

But then again, as an outspoken, obnoxious, out there, and in yer face kind person, i would have thought that my real address, which is written on my card would have been kindly donated to spammers as well?

My ihug addresses are going down along with the account i was too lazy to cancell till now, so it doesn't matter, infact i invite all spammers to add pugwash@ihug.co.nz to their data bases, just to get the failure/bounce rates higher. Let spammers pay for bandwidth, we need more anyway!

83735 2002-09-27 23:15:00 Susan, I see from that link you gave that there is various opinions on the subject. I think if the "helpful" hints were kept simple and worded in a non-scarey friendly manner it would stop some new posters getting a first reply of "I don't have ESP today ... post more details".

Perhaps the "Help" section could have a glossary of common terms added eg:

OS Operating system, eg Windows XP, Windows 98
IE Internet Explorer

Just a thought ...

Back on topic again ... I have had one hotmail account for nearly 2 years that I used on web site that require such info, I hardly ever got spam but lately I am up to 1 a day (don't laugh, that is a huge increase!). As was mentioned before, the longer you have that address the greater the chance it will be picked up by spammers. My home addy has only received about 5 spam emails (of the adult nature) in the last 18 months ... all from someone with the same ISP ???

Who knows?

83736 2002-09-27 23:18:00 Whenever I sign up for something, and I am not worried about getting follow-up emails (Say if I want a new Yahoo identity) I just type in any old rot ie: Ivor_Biggun@xtra.co.nz, Pugwash@Ihug.co.nz or even xyz666@netscape.net.

I would never use my real email, but I know plenty who do.

I agree with you Chris, I have had a shocking amount of spam lately to my "real" xtra addy Probably because others on-forward jokes etc that I send out. Looks like its time to re-install Mailwasher!
