83637 2002-09-27 01:53:00 Using win XP, I downloaded winRAR a week back to open a file - its an evalutation copy, i noticed there is no uninstall and in add or remove programs it says winRAR archiver 2.64mb - is that how i uninstall it?? Just wondered cause of the archiver part(does that mean the whole progam?). Before having winRAR i had the normal xp zip (which i presume was winzip even tho it wasn't in programs). And winRAR has taken over all my .zip files now. Anyway any feedback on which one people prefer to use i.e the standard xp one or winRAR??? And if i decide to get rid of it will all my zip files go back to as they were before?
Thanks in advance. E.g it is just a file association thing isn't it? P.s i had always wondered why even tho i could extract files in xp there was no winzip listed in programs? Is that what it used?

83638 2002-09-27 02:11:00 I don't have any experience with uninstalling WinRAR, however, if there is an uninstallation program then this "should" return your assotiations to their previous status, if this is not the case however the program you previously used should have either an option to restore file associations (which may come up when you start it or may be under options/preferences), or have a reg file somewhere to do this. 83639 2002-09-27 02:11:00 winRAR is far better than the built in zip utilities :) not as nice to look at but works far better and more formats. tweak'e (174)
83640 2002-09-27 02:13:00 The entry for winrar under the add/remove dialog will be either an uninstaller, or will run a program which will give you the option of uninstalling or adding components. SaAB (1292)
83641 2002-09-27 02:13:00 J - I prefer winRAR as RAR archives have better compression ratios to zip files and winRAR opens more types of compressed files. After a month you have to pay for it, or you have to click OK to the reminder mesage each time you open it.

To uninstall winRAR just use the item in add/remove programs. The uninstall file is located here: c:\program files\winrar\uninstall.exe

XP natively supports zip and cab files. It is not winzip, it is XP's internal file compression utility which allows you to open such files.

If you want to keep winRAR for RAR archives, but want all others to stay with XP, read the file association FAQ.

83642 2002-09-27 02:54:00 Thanks for the prompt answers guys, great, o.k i think i will stick with what the pros use/recommend (G P & tweak'e) - and thanks for filling me in on the zip files thing in xp being an internal (G P) as i had always wondered about that! So if i was to uninstall it it would revert back to the internal file compression utility i presume, but i think i would rather keep it for all files if you guys say it is better, than change back to xps for a few!!! As i noticed it had changed alot of file associations that was all, and wondered if it would cause any probs in future. Thanks heaps - sounds like a good program then :-) and thanks to that goes to you too G P :-) J ZEP (336)
