83899 2002-09-28 00:59:00 Is it just me or is this network really really annoying.

You go to a website which has something that you would like to download. You click the download button. It then links you to one of the above sites which then links to back to the orginal sites server to get the download from.

What the hell is the point of this :?|

83900 2002-09-28 04:20:00 Aren't they clever! It doesn't load a server to tell you where a file is. Giving you the download does load the processor and use their bandwidth. So site A knows that a file is in site B, so points you to site B for the download. But site B's people realise that this is happening (they read their logfiles) and put in a bit of code ("if this request is forwarded from site A, shoot it back"). I suppose it could get worse ... if site B sends the request to site C, which sends it to site D, which sends it to site A, which sends it to site B ... :D

History:
In the early days of the Internet, Finland had a connection of 56 kb/s (as did NZ). That is the total bandwidth for the country. There were a number of very clever people in Finland, so there were some popular FTP sites. They didn't mind you looking. It hurt them to have you downloading if you weren't in Finland. So they asked people elsewhere to get the files from the mirror sites. It let them use their very limited bandwidth for useful things. And people got the files quicker from the USA, from sites with megabits of bandwidth.

I think places must get paid a lot of money for the ads and crap that download.com dish out when you visit their site.
