84531 2002-09-29 22:11:00 Help, I still can't get the configuration lines in config.sys and autoexec.bat to successfully load my external cd-rom. I can't get the driver lines right, in fact I don't even know which ones to put first, and what portbase I need, and what options and swithes need to be inserted. Help!!!
Also when I load windows, the connectit program uses an epatcd9x.mpd device driver. Do I use this in the config.sys or autoexec.bat files or what? I'm completely lost!!!

84532 2002-09-29 22:33:00 DEVICE=CDROM.SYS /D=driver_name

This goes into the Config.sys file, where CDROM.SYS is the name of the CD ROM driver, and the following goes into the Autoexec.bat:

MSCDEX.EXE /D:driver_name [/L:drive_letter]

Make sure that the /D:driver_name is the same name that you assign the driver in the config.sys under the switch /D=driver_name.

84533 2002-09-29 22:52:00 This doesn't really help, because I keep getting a list of switches to use, and then it says device driver not found. It may help to know that I aspi.sys is a driver manager, and epat.sys is the actual cd device driver I think. Young Whiz Kid (2051)
84534 2002-09-29 23:12:00 Im confused also over the aspicd.sys file. All the info I get says its a scsi driver, yet you say the CD connects to a parallel port.

Just to confuse you even more have a look at this

site (ftp.dataconstruction.se) which was obtained by putting aspicd.sys into a Google search. These are instructions for loading the drivers of a scsi cdrom with an Adaptec card.

There is also a forum asking about the same problem you can find if you type in epatcd.sys into Google, but there is no resolution I could see.

84535 2002-09-30 02:55:00 Here's another site that discusses a very similar situation:
www.experts-exchange.com

From searches the Shuttle epat cdrom sure does seem to be a parallel port device, so why the scsi driver? Maybe some kind of scsi emulation.

I have to give up on this one, just cant find anything that gives straight forward info.

84536 2002-09-30 04:04:00 The SCSI driver is a standard one for any "ASPI" device. The epat.sys driver will make the parallel device look like a SCSI one, so the standard driver can handle it. I am guessing, but I'd try the order aspi.sys, epat.sys. When we get the drivers to stop complaining about missing options, so they both load, you could flip the order if it doesn't work that way.

The portbase option (for epat?) will be the address of your printer port (probably 278, though it could be 3bc, or (probably not) 378). These are hexadecimal numbers so it might want the form 0x278 or $278.

What other options do they ask for?

Config.sys is an DOS thing ... it knows nothing about ".mpd" files.

84537 2002-09-30 05:51:00 OK the program at this link will do what you want . The site is where you get directed to when going to Shuttle . Click on Parallel-ATA/ATAPI, then click on PP-ATAPI downloads, and scroll down the page to PP-ATAPI DOS and get dosepatc . exe

Run the . exe to expand the package read the text file and follow instructions, but when it prompts you that your boot drive is C:\ change it to A:\ and it will write your autoexec . bat and config . sys for you .

You HAVE to run this program from DOS

. scmmicrosystems . com/downloads . html?PID[0]=3&PID[1]=4&PID[2]=17&PID[3]=36&PID[4]=35&PID[5]=16&s1=8&s2=13#PP-ATAPI" target="_blank">www . scmmicrosystems . com

I couldnt get this url formatted properly, it's so long, so you will have to copy and paste

Basically autoexec . bat has the line:
MSCDEX /D:ASPI_CD /M:10

Config . sys has the lines
device=epatcd . sys
device=aspicd . sys

Let us know how you get on .

84538 2002-09-30 06:05:00 One more thing, when you install the program from install.exe it creates another driver called ASPIHDRM.SYS, as well as EPATCD.SYS and ASPICD.SYS (in C:\SHUTTLE), which you already have. Ive no idea what this is, nor does it say anywhere what its for. But I suppose it wouldnt do any harm to put that on your boot disk too.

Also when it writes config.sys it says device=c:\shuttle\epatcd.sys etc,
as you are using a boot floppy just edit out the c:\shuttle bits.

84539 2002-09-30 06:54:00 You have been busy Terry. ;-)

That url looks to have a spurious space inserted in it by the fforum's formatting ... so

YWK: the part showing as "=3&PID[ 3]" should not have the space after the "[". That's how it displays to me ... and it might differ for your screen so watch for any space in the url ... there should be none.

84540 2002-09-30 07:09:00 Sharp eyes Graham, I just tried that url again, edited out the space, but it came back again in "Preview", I wondered why the page didnt quite get to where it should have done when I copied and pasted to check the link.
I wonder how one can get rid of spurious spaces?
