| 84438 | 2002-09-29 10:12:00 | so i just read that ogg vorbis is out of beta and "onto the shelves" so to speak... reckon it's worth using over mp3? is it worth converting my entire music collection to it? I hear that even at low bitrates it offers superior quality... and I just downloaded coolplayer which supports it :D and freerip which can encode to it :D:D any thoughts most welcome.... |

DO NOT covert mp3 to ogg . thats just a waste of time . |

Ogg isn't CLEARLY better than mp3, so why waste a perfectly good collection of mp3s just to get it into ogg format? Who's to say another format won't come out even better? Lo. |

On my side of things, I would ALMOST be willing to re rip everything JUSt to have it in open sourced format... ALMOST. so would it be advantageous to from now on rip to ogg instead of MP3? Another format probably will come out, but right NOW it's a toss up between mp3 or ogg vorbis(microsoft can shove their .wma right up their media player...) |

| 84444 | 2002-09-29 10:57:00 | it depends on what your mp3's are encoded with. rip a few and compare it. most of my early ones where xing (which is crap). ogg is a lot smaller and far better. lame isn't to bad. a bit fiddly to get it just right. |

| 84445 | 2002-09-29 11:04:00 | virtually all of mine are xing, coz I got audiocatalyst off a mate, but I've got rid of that now... of course with onboard sound and crappy little speakers I might not be able to tell the diff, but i was planning on getting some better hardware sometime, which is what got me thinking of this... |
