84438 2002-09-29 10:12:00 so i just read that ogg vorbis is out of beta and "onto the shelves" so to speak...
reckon it's worth using over mp3? is it worth converting my entire music collection to it?
I hear that even at low bitrates it offers superior quality...
and I just downloaded coolplayer which supports it :D
and freerip which can encode to it :D:D
any thoughts most welcome....

ogg has been out of beta for some time now . its even been used in a few games .

winamp also supports it . very good codec, free, and simple to encode with .

i've reripped my cds to ogg . sounds good without being to large .

DO NOT covert mp3 to ogg . thats just a waste of time .

84440 2002-09-29 10:31:00 Unless you are re-encoding completely from original cd's, there would be no quality gain from shifting your mp3 collection to ogg . In fact, you will find a considerable loss in quality if you choose to do so .

Transcoding . . . NEVER do it .

84442 2002-09-29 10:38:00 But the time you will be investing in re-ripping EVERYTHING to cd again would be IMHO a waste of time. Ogg isn't CLEARLY better than mp3, so why waste a perfectly good collection of mp3s just to get it into ogg format?

Who's to say another format won't come out even better?

84443 2002-09-29 10:55:00 this is true, but I like to have things in the same format ;)
and I very much like the idea of open source...
On my side of things, I would ALMOST be willing to re rip everything JUSt to have it in open sourced format... ALMOST.

so would it be advantageous to from now on rip to ogg instead of MP3?

Another format probably will come out, but right NOW it's a toss up between mp3 or ogg vorbis(microsoft can shove their .wma right up their media player...)

84444 2002-09-29 10:57:00 it depends on what your mp3's are encoded with. rip a few and compare it.

most of my early ones where xing (which is crap). ogg is a lot smaller and far better. lame isn't to bad. a bit fiddly to get it just right.

84445 2002-09-29 11:04:00 virtually all of mine are xing, coz I got audiocatalyst off a mate, but I've got rid of that now...
of course with onboard sound and crappy little speakers I might not be able to tell the diff, but i was planning on getting some better hardware sometime, which is what got me thinking of this...

84446 2002-09-29 11:04:00 as a matter of interest, what do you use to rip to ogg? loser (538)
84447 2002-09-29 11:14:00 i use CDEX and for any damaged disks i use EAC. i use cdex in paranoid mode. only catch i have with EAC is no cddb support for ogg where cdex does. tweak'e (174)
