84330 2002-09-29 03:30:00 I have three PC's networked together, all running winXP. I recently noticed that there is a hidden share on the root of the c:

This hidden share can be accessed by all the other computers on the network, and is present on all three. (It is accessed by typing //computer-name/c$/)

This gives read/write access to all files on my computer whether I want to or not. I can't disable the share, as Windows tell me it has been set up for administrative purposes.

What I would like to know is:

Is there a way to disable it, or lock it down such that no other users on the LAN can access it?

Is there a way to access it via the internet? I can use //IP address/c$ as well, but I cannot test it as I have no access to an unsecured connection to test it with.

Cheers
Craig.

See the following MS support article on How to Create and Disable Administrative Shares on Windows XP (support.microsoft.com)

Paranoia. I love it. :D
