84322 2002-09-29 02:41:00 Wanting to connect up with "Echo link" (A Ham radio programme) using XPpro. I get the following instuctions and have no idea how to carry them out.

In order to use Echo link, you ned to adjust some settings. The software must be configured to allow TCP port 5200 to pass outboard, and UDP ports 5198 and 5199 to pass inbound and outbound.

This Echo link programme works OK on win98 but the firewall in XP blocks it.

Any help appreciated...Ron..

84323 2002-09-29 02:47:00 Ron, not sure that XP firewall is easily configured. It may be that you need to disable it and use Nortons PF or Zone Alarm.

It may even require that you disable the firewall altogether when using the program, which is the easiest step.

84325 2002-09-29 06:19:00 Easy!
Start - Control Panel - Network Connections - right click on the appropriate one (dial up or local area network) and select properties

Click on the advanced tab, deselect the firewall, OK or apply your way out.

You *may* need to reboot, not sure.

I dont run with my firewall on usually as it randomly affects printing over my LAN. I use a router for security on my ADSL internet connection.

84326 2002-09-29 06:51:00 Absolutely no experience with XP but if you go to the New IRC Users site they give a very simple tutorial on how to set specific ports and services in the firewall .

The url is . newircusers . com/java/xp . html" target="_blank">www . newircusers . com

Hope this helps, as it does seem to be such a waste to disable your firewall .

84328 2002-09-29 09:31:00 The reason I dont use it, is that the XP firewall is effective only as in-bound only according to the experts, and therefore ineffective against trojans and the like.

Its better than nothing, but it does not give any alerts or warnings. There are good free firewalls available that are outbound and inbound.

84329 2002-09-30 00:32:00 Many thanks to Godfather and Gorela for answering my cry for help. At the moment I have followed the advice and disabled the firewall and can now communicate around the world through the computer.
I tried to setup the ports as advised by Gorela but was not able to follow it right through.
Thanks again ..Ron.
