84249 2002-09-29 00:28:00 Hi - I have been helping my friend to get on to the internet and she is running Windows XP Home Edition. When she connects to her ISP she can search on the internet but when she goes to Outlook express it will only stay on line for a short while.

I brought the latest imag yesterday and there was a letter in the tips and questions that sounded just like the problem we were having with her computer. The answer to that was to check that the "hang up after sending and receiving" is not checked. This is not checked so I don't feel that this is the problem. Does anyone have any ideas?

I was thinking of trying another email program to see if this helps. Or maybe reinstalling Outlook?

Thanks for your help.

84250 2002-09-29 01:34:00 Why would you want to stay connected? It is only used for sending or receiving. All composing of mail is done off-line. Personally, I have the box ticked so it does disconnect.

84251 2002-09-29 07:51:00 I have mine "checked" so I can auto-download emails if and when they come available. It also helps keep my dial-up internet connection active, for when I am downloading music. Baldy (26)

It is a neat e-mail program.
I use it instead of oe.

84253 2002-09-29 10:09:00 That's a baffling one .

Try doing some tests: connect to the internet and ONLY open Outlook Express . Check for emails and see what happens . Does it throw you offline then? If so, the problem is in OE .

If it doesn't, close OE and open Internet Explorer . Still online? Do some browsing, stay online 10 minutes or more and see if you get thrown off . If so, the problem is in IE - go through the Tools>Options and see if there is something amiss in there . If there isn't, try doing a repair of IE from Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs .

If you don't get thrown off the internet, reopen OE while IE is running and see what happens .

Let us know your results . :-)

84254 2002-09-30 07:22:00 Hi Susan
Thanks for your advice which I tried this afternoon. After connecting to Internet Explorer we surfed the internet for about 15 -20 mins. Once we went over to outlook express to check emails we were disconnected within 3 minutes. Very frustrating.

I think I will try another email program. Any other ideas?

84255 2002-09-30 07:35:00 Did you have any programs or windows open when you went to Outlook ?

The same thing has happened to me when I have been downloading, and have a couple of windows open, and have put it down to my computer running out of memory

Just a thought

84256 2002-09-30 07:49:00 No the only thing we had running was internet explorer. Chooky (1401)
84257 2002-09-30 08:47:00 Purely going from memory here, but there is an option to disconnect if the connection is idle after a set time. It is either located in the Internet Options in control panel or it is an option in IE under options. Perhaps some one can check their windows machine and give you something more precise. 84258 2002-09-30 09:35:00 This may sound a little silly, but is worth checking, as options/ideas are running out - that tick next to "hang up after sending and receiving" - well when you untick it there should be an "apply" at the bottom and then "o.k" (if i remember rightly{not on that machine at mo}but could be wrong or thinking of something else) - there have been occasions where people forget to apply the setting so it looks like its unticked etc... Also the only other setting would be the one to "check mail every " so many minutes, may be worth checking that one too?? Does it actually seem to be disconnecting after checking the mail?? or a bit longer after its finished checking the mail?? And is it disconnecting and getting an error message? With win. xp, Norton Anti Virus 2001 caused me some problems a little similar to this? Sorry i can't think of much else!! - but after doing susans test it does seem to be O.Express related - so it can't be the setting disconnect when idle or what ever that setting is. J ZEP (336)
