84379 2002-09-29 05:37:00 It is a Conexant hcf v90 (D-Link)
Windows 98 detects it and it will dial but then disconnects and says the remote computer is not answering.
I have the correct drivers loaded and no conflicts.
I feel it is a software fault, not hardware, have just reinstalled win98 after a format.

84380 2002-09-29 05:42:00 or could it be that the remote computer is not answering!!!!!!!!!!!!!

how about trying to ring the number through a normal telephone, stick your ear as close to the telephone as you can, you may also need to turn up the volume, then listen to see if it someone picks up at the other end.

84381 2002-09-29 05:44:00 So what exactly is the problem?

Who is being called? An ISP?
Used the ISP's latest installation disk?
Cleared static IPs and set to "Obtain an IP address automatically"?
Is the telephone number a valid number?
Set the locale to NZ?
Entered the phone number correctly?

84382 2002-09-29 05:53:00 Yeah it is an Isp, can connect using the same settings from my own machine.
The 2 modems will do the handshaking thing screetching at each other then a pause for 5-15 seconds or so then disconnect and a message saying remote computer not answering.

84383 2002-09-29 06:03:00 Ensure that only TCP/IP is been used under the "networking" in the properties of your dial up connection.
also ensure that "log onto network" is not enabled

84384 2002-09-29 06:36:00 Double-click on My Computer, then double-click on Dial-Up Networking.
Right-click on the connection icon and choose Properties.
Click the Configure button.
Change maximum speed to 38.400
Click the Connection tab.
Click the Advanced button.

In "Extra settings," enter the string. +MS=V34
Click OK to save changes.
Shut down the computer and turn it back
on to activate the changes.

84386 2002-09-29 10:08:00 by the sounds of it you have poor phone lines. your pretty much stuck with it unless you can find/fix any faults in the lines. tweak'e (174)
84387 2002-09-29 10:18:00 Probably as tweak'e says, but also had this thought. The PR233 runs at 200MHz with a 66Mhz bus, or 188Mhz if the m/b can be set to 75Mhz. I wonder if this could be getting marginal for an hcf winmodem? It is usually said at least 166Mhz for a winmodem, but I cant see how that would neccessarily affect connection speed though. See if you can borrow an external modem to check your lines with. Terry Porritt (14)
84388 2002-09-29 10:28:00 That extra setting gives you a 33k connection, your phone lines are not good enough to allow a connect at 56k.
You are better to stick with 33k which will be more stable and will give reasonable download speeds.
If you try to connect at a faster speed you will have problems connecting with error 650 and probably you will also have disconnect problems.
