2002-09-30 23:01:00 | Hi, Can anyone advise what decides whether a computer is MMX or not; is it the m/board, the BIOS, the CPU or some integration of these things? Reason I'm asking is that I've just purchased a processor upgrade rated as maximum for motherboard. Haven't installed it as yet but, up till now, have been non-MMX while this processsor is rated MMX. Is this all I need to go the MMX way or can I expect problems? Jim | jaybee (1199) | |

It comes standard with any Intel processor Pentium II and above... and even then was availible with later edition Pentium I chips. Todays post by tweak'e (on the top of the forum list) lists a useful tool to diagnose your CPU and it's features. Download it and see what it comes up with if you're still unsure. :) |

2002-09-30 23:31:00 | According to SiSoft Sandra CPU is described as generic ( some might say geriatric :-) ) VIA/Cyrix 6x86-S@134 MHZ. Co-Processor (FPU) built in. No mention of MMX but says m/board can handle upgraded processor. | jaybee (1199) | |

2002-09-30 23:50:00 | No. Upgrade I'm looking at is AMD K6 CPU PR2-266 - rated as highest the m/board will take. | jaybee (1199) | |
2002-10-01 00:23:00 | i'm rusty with the early cpu's but i think there is a MMX p1-233 which would be quicker than the k6-266. (btw i'm looking for one myself so if you see a few....;-) ) | tweak'e (174) | |
2002-10-01 05:58:00 | if the k6 is MMX, then it'll probably rate about the same as the p1-233, won't it? Mike.

2002-10-01 06:11:00 | You've got me there :-) Present setup is 166 and the 2-66 is processor I bought but not, as yet, installed. Will probably go ahead with install and see what happens :D Jim | jaybee (1199) | |
2002-10-01 07:01:00 | Yes - up until recently my Comp was powered by an Cyrix/IBM 6x86 M2 P233 - offically they could not call them MMX, so they called them M2. Still have it. Bye
