84768 2002-09-30 10:36:00 RedHat 7.2

I had the Cd's so I installed it after trying out Knoppix on my Jukebox PC this arvo.
I installed it sweet as, Resolution is at 640x480 even though monitor does 800x600 and card does 1600x1200. I asked it before, but I've fully forgotten how to change the resolution. It was in the Konsole if I remember rightly.
I'm running KDE, not too sure which version.
Also, In Knoppix, It picks up my sound card fine. In RedHat 7.2 it doesn't seem to wanna play. It picked up my second HDD which has my media on it and worked fine. I think I've mounted it correctly and stuff, but it still wont play.
Using XMMS, It says please check:
You've got the correct output plugin
No other progs are blocking the soundcard
your soundcard is configured properly.

I have no idea how to do any of this.
For nw I'm just gonna try using Knoppix, but the K Menu dissappears and causes an error in my system for some reason.

Anyways
Any help much appreciated. Once this is nailed, I'm gonna try Samba. Its installed, but just getting it to work is the trick... tricky... not easy.... oh man!!!

84769 2002-09-30 13:13:00 Hi Chilling_Silence,

To configure your graphics check out your earlier Linux Newbie in to deep post. That should tell you how to run Xconfigurator and also point you to a discussion about Samba and Swat.

Now sound. Open a terminal window and enter cat /proc/modules | grep soundcore This should tell you what module has been loaded.
Next su to root and enter /usr/sbin/sndconfig This will start the sound configuration utility. After you finish it should be up and running.

84771 2002-09-30 22:48:00 I think we need to develop an Linux FAQ, with some links to some good sites, so people can find out their information. roofus (483)
84772 2002-09-30 22:55:00 There's a great idea. I'm most interested in the configuring of Linux... I love fiddling with settings to achieve results (most of the time to my resultant dismay when an OS fails to boot).

There are already alot of resources out there. A quick google search reveals pages of handy docs, though an all-in-one FAQ on the PressF1/PC World site would be great!

(Now hoping there isn't one already as not to look like an arse) ;)

84773 2002-10-01 02:02:00 No, Don't think there's one.. I know some of them touch on it.. but yesterday there wasnt one..

I'm with you all the way. I LOVE to tweak things and my favorite pass-time is formatting PC's!! (Well, Close to favorite....)

You're right about the resources, Linux seems to be VERY well documented to me.

Just a few basic FAQs, Display settings, sound, and networking...
I know I've asked a sound question, Display and networking are next on my list (I'm doing 640x480 but I know my monitor can do 800x600 in Doze, and the Adapter is 4 megs, so no prob there).

FAQ sounds like a good idea to me.. I'd be keen to play crash dummy too!

If you ask me, there's gonna be a lot more queries filtering through, as Knpooix is on this months cover disc, Its gonna promt a few people to give it a shot (Myself Included).

What do the rest of ya think??

Cheers

84774 2002-10-01 05:34:00 There is a lot of documentation on your installation CDs. Gnome has an "Info" button, I think, and KDE will have something similar. The Guides might not be there, but you can find them at many mirrors. I've posted the url for the Dunedin LUG (thread.jsp?forum=1&thread=22440) here a number of times. (My first posting in that thread is the one you want). Graham L (2)
84775 2002-10-01 06:41:00 It is getting to the point where us confused new Linux users are becoming a large part of the forum populus. I dont see why we should devide the FAQ by operating system..
Lets just sneak a few Linux Faqs into the system as we go!

84776 2002-10-01 06:48:00 I think a FAQ on GNU/Linux is a great idea. As you say, keep it simple with perhaps links to peoples favourite info sites for the popular GNU/Linux OS's around. Have Graham L's local Linux site listed as well. As I am about to launch into SuSE 8 myself I am always on the lookout for helpful tips.
