Quake Tenebrae version 1 . 02 is out
Quake Tenebrae, the modification of the quake source that adds stencil shadows and per pixel lights to quake, version 1 . 02 has been released . Quake Tenebrae uses Stencil shadows allow for realistic shadow effects on every object in the game world . Per pixel lighting allows you to have fine surface details correctly lit . These are essentially the same algorithms as used by the new Doom game . This version has the following changes:
Runs faster (25% on my system)
Radeon support (Thanks to Jarno Paananen)
Reflections
Glares
Md3 support
Animation interpolation
Luminance textures (local light for texture)
"Modern" particle engine
Uses lights from the original maps (less dark)
Flashlight and flares
Bug fixes (see Readme)

DDR-II Standard in the Works
It is being reported that The JEDEC Solid State Technology Association has started formally working on a new DDR-II specification for graphics cards . Here's a bit on what Silicon Strategies (http://www . siliconstrategies . com) has reported:
While the standard could be released as early as the end of this year, sources believe we should expect it early next year . Following the typical trend, we can expect to see unofficial releases of the technology by ATI and nVidia within the next few months

Although JEDEC deliberations are confidential, sources from the standards body said the quarterly meeting this month heard presentations for a proposed graphics version of its basic DDR-II standard for PC main memory .

ATI Technology and Nvidia Corp . are expected to introduce graphics cards with DDR-II memory chips even before a new JEDEC standard is approved . Since graphics card memory is point-to-point mounted directly on the board, vendors can validate chips and work out interfaces themselves . The JEDEC graphics standard would be an added benefit by eliminating any of the small proprietary twists memory suppliers now try to add to their DDR-II chips to lock in customers .

nVidia AGP 8X cards clocked higher than NV25s
The Inquirer has reported that the new 8x AGP GPUs are a faster than the NV25 chips of the current Ti series of cards . Here's the scoop on what they are saying:
Nvidia initially recommended a 250MHz clock speed for the TI 4200 at the time they introduced it but now we learned that this frequency will actually be a bit faster .

The NV28 in its weakest implementation -- the TI 4200-8X -- will be clocked at 275MHz on Nvidia's recommendation, while partners, as always, can clock their own versions even higher . Usually, they never let anyone clock lower but we know that at least one manufacturer will clock at 270, five megahertz lower than recommended .

Nvidia, using a 0 . 15 process, managed to squeeze a few more megahurtz from its chips . So these chips could be seen as some kind of update or increase in speed compared to the six-month-old original daddy, the NV25 .

It's the same scenario as seen with the step from Geforce 3 to Geforce 3 TI 500, where a few tens of megahertz were squeezed out of the chip and some faster memory destined to become cheaper in that six-month period was used for these cards .

So expect the AGP 8X cards to be faster than AGP 4X but not just because of this port . Any significant speed difference noted is more likely to be because of the increased clock speed . AGP 8X is generally only 2 to 3 per cent quicker than AGP 4X, despite the increased bandwidth .
