| 84629 | 2002-09-30 04:33:00 | My computer (windows 98) will not fully defrag C:. It takes ages to get to 10%, crawls to 50%, regularly stops inbetween, then recommences from scratch with the message "drives contents changed - restarting". What's happening?. |

| 84632 | 2002-09-30 04:42:00 | Firstly, have a look in your system tray in the bottom-right corner of the screen; are there many icons there? If there are, try right-clicking and closing/exiting them. This will give more memory to Defrag, and hopefully speed things up a bit. Failing that, try running Scandisk first to repair errors which may be causing trouble. |

| 84635 | 2002-09-30 06:38:00 | Starting in safe mode (if F8 does not work for you, hold CTRL at the DOS prompt) is the way to go as it cuts out all those programmes running in the background. You still need to deactivate your screensaver because every time it starts up during a defrag it changes the state of the hard drive - and you go back and restart the defrag. Power Defrag (WWW.e-technik.com) uses the Windows' defrag app to do the job but does it more efficiently. Incidentally, to see just what is running in the background on your computer > Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information > Tools > System Configuration Utility > Startup tab. Here you will probably see all the boxes ticked, which means you are authorising all those programmes to run in the background all the time, whether you need them or not. Remove the ticks from all that you know you will not want to run permanently, but make sure you enable anything to do with your anti-virus programme, anything to do with Go Back, Zone Alarm, Scan Registry, Load Power Profile, Task Monitor, True Vector, and Script Blocking.
