85022 2002-10-01 10:14:00 Hi,
I've just come across the Maintance Wizard in WIN 98se (the one where you can set your PC to run defrag, scandisk etc) and i was wondering if your PC has to be switched on - or will the program switch i on (eg. if i set it to run Defrag at 1am on SUN, and i switch the PC off when i go to bed on SAT night, will the PC switch on at 1am to run the program?) and if so, will (or can) you get it to switch off the PC afterwards??

IF not, is there a program tht will do this?
Cheers

85023 2002-10-01 10:36:00 Yep, plenty of software about to shut yer PC down.

However, your PC needs to be running in order to run software. At this stage, the only thing that can turn your computer on from power off is your finger.

85024 2002-10-01 10:37:00 Hi fergie

No your computer can't be set to switch on for maintenance and then switch off and I am sure there is no program that will do it. You need to leave your computer running but you can set it to run maintenance at any time day or night.

85025 2002-10-01 10:49:00 Hi...

You may need to close background programs before defrag scheduling, otherwise defrag may not work properly...

Cheers...

85027 2002-10-01 23:01:00 Goto PCworld.co.nz and search for AutoDown.

it's a small piece of software that should work with a defrag... Haven't tried it out though for that purpose. I usually use itfor late night downloads

85029 2002-10-02 04:58:00 I dispute these comments about the comptuer unable to turn itself on to do maintenance tasks.
While i do have WinME. my computer use to turn itself on to do defrag/scandisk/virus check/backup, whatever i had in the maintenance schedule.
However i have since changed this and don't know how to enable it again.
I very well may have been in hibernation mode, but it is still possible,.

However the comptuer didn't turn off itself once these tasks were complete
