85325 2002-10-02 08:17:00 Hi, I had W98SE & W2000 installed as a dual boot, everything was running fine, but my W98 install got corrupted & I had to reinstall W98, which over wrote the Boot Sector?? & now will not let me boot into W2000 (NTLDR,etc got written over), only in to W98. I tried to boot to a W2000 CD & choose "Repair a 2000 installation" using the Emergency repair process, but it will not let me as I hadn't previously made an E.R.Disk (I also tried the option to let 2000 try to detect a 2000 installation w/out using the ERD, but this won't work. So my Q' is can I use the Recovery Console & use the FIXMBR or FIXBOOT CMDs to enable me to boot into 2000 again w/out stuffing up the ability to also boot into W98SE. If so, which Command should I use? Thanks. quackle (2097)

Further details here (support.microsoft.com).

85327 2002-10-02 10:00:00 Thanks mate. quackle (2097)
85328 2002-10-02 10:22:00 I'm not sure now, I found this on the Net from some guy with a similar problem - this is what he said "I quickly tried the old DOS trick--*fdisk /mbr--* which was a long shot that didn't work. But the online Help revealed the Fixboot command, which solved my problem. I can now boot my Win2K installation and get back to work. OK--* my Win98 partition is now unbootable, but that is another (and less important) matter. " quackle (2097)
85329 2002-10-02 10:37:00 Read this (support.microsoft.com) especially the section labelled "Adding an Operating System" Merlin (503)
85330 2002-10-02 10:46:00 Thanks, but my BOOT.INI file was deleted when I reinstalled W98 (W98 created a new MBR??) quackle (2097)
85331 2002-10-02 12:08:00 Boot.ini is a hidden file visible by clearing the "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" check box.

It must exist for Windows to load.

The file is created by Windows NT/2000/XP - depending on the operating system installed.

Another option is reply to (www.freetechsupport.com) :
"I formatted and reinstalled WinNT on my C: partition while Win98 remained on my D: partition. Now the new boot.ini file doesn't make any reference to Windows98 on the D: drive. What line do I add to the boot.ini file to get the option again of booting to Win98? My Windows98 is inaccessible! Please help."

85332 2002-10-03 07:08:00 Thanks, but the prob is W98 is still bootable & over wrote the 2000 boot files in C: when I reinstalled W98. So I can't get to BOOT.INI. W98 would have over written it when I reinstalled W98. I tried unchecking hide system files, etc. quackle (2097)
85333 2002-10-03 08:28:00 Make up your mind.

At 9.22 pm on Oct 2, you stated that you could boot into 2000 but not 98

Today you state the exact opposite.

Glasses need polishing Merlin? It was a quote off the net, not a statement by the poster....
