As for the coment its mutating faster than AV tech can keep up with, well yea of course it does otherwise the thing wouldn't last very long. You will find most virus' mutate these days.

As for comments stating that they got it through their xtramail, i find that kinda hard to believe, xtra has been protecting against it since it went public on the 30th. If they received the virus before then, then yea i agree that xtra didn't stop it.
Put me in my place if im wrong, but can't this virus also affect HMTL pages?, So in that case someone with no antivirus software and using xtra, thought that they were safe and have received it from a web page.
then accused xtra of not protecting?

True, but i'll bet there will be those who just don't get what the message is aboot, and open the attachment....

I'm just suggesting we be carefull, particually in a shared computer enviroment. This is the first virus that has got passed NAV in my six years of playing with computers/internet. I therefore take it more seriously, and advise that we dont simply rely on AV to catch it for us.

85431 2002-10-04 00:13:00 Thanks Graham, I'll have to have a play with it at some other time.

Can you only restore certain items. Because I know that if I set a restore point like the one you described. I'd be worried about losing the couple of GBs of files I would've got off their computer.

85432 2002-10-04 00:28:00 It's not like a disc image. It only restores system files, registry, etc. So, any files you have copied/ saved wil still be there. It only restores OS files to get your OS back how it was. I am not sure how it deals with installed apps (ie I don't know if it actually deletes the folder in the Program Files folder), but as long as you have the CD or installer file you should be right. eg - this situation happend night before last, a german friend of my flatmates came over to play quake, whil he was here I copied 10GB of german hiphop and drum and bass. Did a system restore afterwards, and music is still there. Very interesting too by the way.

85433 2002-10-04 00:39:00 If you install a program such as a firewall and then run system restore to a point before you downloaded the firewall, you will have to download and install the fire wall again. Danger (287)

You may be right in terms of having to install it again, but you will NOT have to redownload the installer file - try it if you don't agree.

There is a KB article on the system restore function. It will explain the details - I am too lazy at the moment to search for it. I might have a look later.
