85879 2002-10-03 23:24:00 Are there any viruses out there that are actually capable of picking up and sending random files from the infected party's HD? I am having a disagreement with one of my workmates, who reckons that there are no viruses in the wild with this capability, just ones which steal the file names to mask the virus itself.

Now I'm sure that there have been one or two.. can anyone help? I'll share my winnings..! :D

85881 2002-10-03 23:42:00 honeylaser,

There have been many many viruses that do that - the latest being bugbear. I think most of the recent major viruses have done this.

85882 2002-10-03 23:46:00 One Coromandel property developer has sent out an apology to those on its mailing list after inadvertently forwarding sensitive documents stored on its hard drive. The company uses Xtra for its email host but apparently received the virus before Xtra's server-based antivirus solution kicked in.

The company, which did not want to be identified, found the virus had sent out confidential pricing for a number of properties to dozens of people in its address book.

85883 2002-10-03 23:51:00 Bugbear attaches itself as the file, using the file name. It appears to strip out text from the original file and put in the message body.

I disagree (from what I have seen) that Bugbear actually sends the original file.

Everyone jumps to the conclusion it has sent the file. Can anyone actually produce a cleaned file?

Thats what I'm trying to find out. I know that the virus can mask itself as the file, but can it actually send the documents? Or is the idiot National MP from Epsom lying?

"The virus took documents stored on the electoral office PC and emailed them to a number of people on the MP's mailing list as well."

Also, who wants to be the one to tell them that they probably don't even have the virus? Just because you're getting complaints and AV bouncebacks from people who have received emails that appear to have come from you, doesn't necessarily mean that you are infected. Same story as Klez. People are idiots.

You see, I can read that.. but what I'm wanting to know is is there any evidence that these viruses actually compromise security by sending sensitive documents, or are these people idiots. Does the virus strip all of the info out of the docs and imbed itself to make it look legit? If you receive an email which contains the infected attachment, can you clean it and have access to the information, or is it useless?

Hard evidence please.. I need to back myself up. His shout for drinks if I win.. you can all come over for a beer :D

85887 2002-10-04 00:06:00 I repeat, in my case it appeared to have sent the text from within the file but NOT the file.

This would concur with what everyone is saying, as the contents of a file as plain text is as bad as the file in most cases but has anyone seen a FILE
