Persons who champion or favour underdogs.

This one is for the Warriors.

May all good Kiwis be Infracaninophiles this weekend, and a fair smattering of Aussies too, if the Herald letters to the editor this week have been anything to go by. :D :D :D

Cheers

85795 2002-10-03 21:30:00 Well that's definitely the right word for on this forum - it's full of Linux infra... (wait a minute, I'll copy and paste it) Infracaninophiles.

But then, is Linux an underdog? What is the definition of underdog? Something not mainstream? Well that's Linux. :-)

What were you saying about the Warriors again? Who are they? ]:)

85796 2002-10-03 22:48:00 Billy - I had a couple for you, but didn't want to steal your thunder by posting them in my own thread, so here they are:

(a wee story accompanies them).

My flatmate came in the other day and asked me what a semantic malapropism was. I said I didn't know, but semantics was the study of the meaning of words.

We looked up malapropism in good old "Collins" and found it meant the misuse of a word by confusing it with one that sounds similar with comic result.

eg On TV latley there has been an ad for some stupid Aussie comedy/parody where one of the characters announces "I want to be effluent Sheryl!" Meaning of course affluent.

Now it seams to me that semantic malapropism is redundant, in other words, the inclusion of the word semantic is unecessary, and malapropism stands on its own without loss of meaning. I new there must be a term for this, but couldn't for the life of me remember.

I was reading Bruce Chatwins "The Songlines" when there in the text was the word I was looking for pleonasm. Semantic malapropism is a pleonasm! A pleonasm is the use of more words than necessary eg tiny little baby, or semantic malapropism.

Now, I thought that either pleonasm or malapropism were both good candidates for WFTWE, and both are fond in the dictionary. Anyway, story time over.

BTW has anyone else read Chatwins book?? I wouldn't mind getting in touch with you to have a breif discussion about it as I wnat to include it in an essay for environmental ethics and would love some feedback. Sorry, OT but so is this thread.
