| 85700 | 2002-10-03 06:17:00 | The liquid desktop is causing problems, how do I delete this screensaver. File is located in: c/program files/msn gaming zone/windows. If right- clicked, brings up INSTALL--Delete ETC: Can I delete here? The game 3D mars Mission is not required. Can I delete the folder? It is located in:c/games, in a folder named mission also located in: c/program files/msn gaming zone/windows as 2 files and an application. There are no un-install programs for these. My system is using windows ME. If I right-click the above and delete,am I likely to also delete files not associated with these? |

DELETING programs is a sure way to corrupt your installation, as many programs have keys embedded in the Registry, which does not get updated when files are deleted. |

| 85702 | 2002-10-03 08:58:00 | Thanks Godfather, No I cannot find these programs in the add/ remove programs list, first place I looked. Simple it is not, thats why I need help. As the programs were downloaded off the net magazine free CD, I assume to delete any programs transferred to my c/drive, can be deleted, but how? Bluey. |

Have a look in the directories they installed in, sometimes there is an UNWISE.EXE file which is the uninstaller. Some simple programs allow deletion but if they have .exe functions, it can be a disaster, with entries in the .ini files and registry trying to access non existant files, and causing problems. If the programs have a website check there for unistallation. Of course if you just TRANSFERRED them to C: its OK. If you then INSTALLED them its not. If they are a free-standing program that has no links its probably OK I learnt years ago, if you dont really need it, dont install it! |

| 85704 | 2002-10-03 09:46:00 | Yes, I transferred and installed the liquid screen-saver,it locked up the screen after a short while of working OK. I had to turn off the power to the PC,then re-power up. Windows on start-up did a disc damage check and corrected the problem. I searched for the file and found it as indicated above. As the file shows when Right-clicked an Install command, this would indicate it is not installed? if this is so I can delete,or leave well alone? The mission game appears to be a stand alone folder, but how do you tell? If I delete it to the rubbish bin and things go wrong, by restoring it will it correct any problems the delete caused? as you say if you don't need it don't load it. I'M LEARNING--- THE HARD WAY. |

Yes you can delete it. It is part of windows to have an install option on the right click menu of all screensavers. >The mission game appears to be a stand alone folder, but how do you tell? It's not easy, but your best bet would be to run regedit and do a search for the name of the game or the author or company who made it. >If I delete it to the rubbish bin and things go wrong, by restoring it will it correct any problems the delete caused? Yes, as long as you don't change anything. >as you say if you don't need it don't load it. I'm a downloadaholic and install all sorts of junk on my poor old PC. I get away with it though because of habits I have developed such as: *Always choose custom installation, never accept a default anything *Install everything on a separate partition in folders that reside in the root directory *Virus scan everything you download *Know what is being installed, and where. *If it doesn't work the first time, no matter what, it get sents to the bit bucket *Backup frequently There are a lot of shoddily written freeware and shareware programs out there, even some that don't let you specifiy a directory, take over all your file extensions, and don't provided an uninstall! Oh yea, I also use a rollback program. |

| 85706 | 2002-10-04 21:36:00 | Thanks Folks, the problem is now solved. I was able to locate the writer of the software and they advised it was ok to delete the folders, this I did with no detrimental effects. They also avised that an UN-INSTALL shortcut is in Start-up, this is incorrect as I was not able to locate any un-install files associated with the software. |
